Indonesia quake sparks tsunami alert From staff writers and wires 17jul06
AN earthquake measuring 7.2 on the richter scale has raised a tsunami alert for Christmas Island and Indonesia, the Associated Press has reported.
Tall buildings reportedly swayed for at least two minutes in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta and on Java as the quake hit at 3.24pm, AP said.
Cowabunga!
I don't see it on USGS yet.

The Boxing Day quake of 2004 was much stronger, but far from Indonesia's population center of Java.

COULD AFFECT COASTS LOCATED USUALLY NO MORE THAN A HUNDRED
KILOMETERS FROM THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. AUTHORITIES FOR THE
REGION NEAR THE EPICENTER SHOULD BE AWARE OF THIS POSSIBILITY.
AREAS FURTHER FROM THE EPICENTER COULD EXPERIENCE SMALL SEA

POSSIBLE FOR THIS CENTER TO RAPIDLY CONFIRM NOR EVALUATE THE
STRENGTH OF A TSUNAMI IF ONE HAS BEEN GENERATED.
ESTIMATED INITIAL TSUNAMI WAVE ARRIVAL TIMES. ACTUAL ARRIVAL TIMES
MAY DIFFER AND THE INITIAL WAVE MAY NOT BE THE LARGEST. THE TIME

This earthquake was pretty far offshore Java and the quake itself likely did no damage whatsoever.
Very slim chance of a local tsunami with a quake that small (if 7.2 is the true final magnitude.)
I'm sure Jimmuh will be on the scene soon to rebuild.
USGS email came in a little while ago.

Yikes, news alert says 6 foot wave destroys houses on Java Island. Doesn't sound good...
JAKARTA (AP)--A powerful earthquake sent a two-meter-high tsunami crashing into a beach resort on Indonesia's Java island Monday, damaging hotels and sending boats smashing into houses, a witness told a local radio station.
People fled to a local hill to escape the wave on Pangandaran beach in west Java, a woman identified as Teti told el-Shinta radio station.
"All the houses are destroyed along the beach," she said
Yikes!
Another, smaller event.

Have you seen any of the networks (Fox, CNN, etc) carrying this yet?
Fox has mentioned it a bit...I've not seen any of the others...though trying to find more.
My post above was based on what FOX mentioned but I haven't heard anything from FOX since, and haven't seen anything yet (vidoe, pics).
Ok.
FOX now saying at least 3 people killed, and a 6.1 aftershock.
FOX reporting at least 3 dead.
CNN reporting 5 dead.
We seem to channel hop to the same places around the same time! LOL. I had just switched to this thread to update and refreshed first and you beat me to it! Our media search for real news continues, huh?! :-)
