SAINT PETERSBURG (AFX) - Russia President Vladimir Putin said he would raise questions about UK Labour Party fund raiser Lord Levy if Prime Minister Tony Blair brings up Russia's democracy record when the two men meet today.

Putin was asked what he would say to Blair after the British ambassador to Moscow attacked Putin's governance last week.

'We carefully hear out all our partners. We take into consideration their views on such issues but we take our decisions ourselves,' Putin told journalists at the G8 summit.

'There are also other questions,' he told a British journalist. 'Questions, let's say, about the fight against corruption. We'd be interested in hearing your experience, including how it applies to Lord Levy.'

Levy was arrested last Wednesday in relation to the 'cash for peerages' scandal that has engulfed Blair's ruling Labour Party.

Blair said he did not expect Putin to ask him about Levy, saying their bilateral discussion would cover international issues.

Yes. Putin's a real jerk. His cronies' physical attacks and defamations against opposition journalists (only one of Russia's several recent violations of human rights) are not comparable to the accusation against someone who worked with PM Blair.

Here we go again, like Bush, Blair is having to answer for someone else's sins. What does one have to do with the other? Nothing. But it makes Pooteepoot feel better. Sounds like a liberal tactic.

"like Bush, Blair is having to answer for someone else's sins"

Someone else's sins? If the allegations have any substance and there were cases where people were rewarded with peerages for donations that they had made to the Labour party, then I think responsibility for that might reasonably be said to rest with the leader of that party.

Especially given the position of Blair over what he portrayed to his great advantage as the 'sleaze' of the Conservative administration that he took over from!

My point is that Pooteepoot should not be throwing stones at the glass house. When he cleans up the shards in his own country then he can criticize someone else's.

Uh huh. And I think his point is that the same would apply to Blair!

It's all just the usual diversionary tactics anyway at the G8 talking shop.
