I would think that hezbollah would head directly to Syria if put into retreat mode.

I'm still not so certain that the ground assault will happen, but it may no longer be in Olmert's hands after Haifa being hit with deadly consequences today.

I personally want to see hezbollah wiped out, but still sincerely doubt the resolve of the current Israeli government.

i agree, but the chances of Syria getting involved aren't miniscule. The IDF is basically signaling to its govt that they want to take a swipe at Syria when it told the media that ball-bearing packed warhead that hit Syria was developed in Syria.
