I believe the area of fighting is in the heart of the Afghan opium growing region, which supplies a hefty percentage of the world's heroin. It is therefore highly probable that many of the combatants listed as being Taliban are, in fact, members of the criminal gangs who control the production and smuggling of drugs in the area.
