I was stationed at the Pentagon circa 1988-91. This was during Desert Storm. Many a time we went upstairs (we worked on the computers in the lower level basement) to hang out in the press area/corridor. It was in the E ring (outside) River entrance, this contains the briefing room you see on tv (much smaller in real life, BTW).
Anyway, when ole Gen Kelly was giving his briefing there were so many press there they'd have to leave the door open as they were spilling out in the hall. We'd be out in the hall with the overflow press listening.
Many a time we'd just be hanging out between briefings and short little old Wolf would stop to talk to us. He'd try to act like one of the fellas (and we were joint duty troops so we'd be a cross service mix, mostly senior NCOs). Every one of us knew what a poser and pansy Wolf was. Bob Zelnick of ABC was a pretty nice guy though, but Jim Miklaszewski of NBC and David Martin of CBS were stuck up and would only talk to officers, which proved their stupidity as we Senior NCOs often knew of things the officers did not. And Katy Couric started there in I believe 1989 as deputy correspondent. A major ditz. Er...some people say, that is.
Wow! Interesting inside info. Thanks.
