Ex-C.I.A. Officer Holds News Conference on Suit
NY Times ^ | 7/14/06 | Neil A. Lewis

Valerie Wilson and her husband, Joseph C. Wilson IV, filed suit on Thursday against Vice President Dick Cheney, Mr. Cheney’s former top aide and the senior presidential adviser Karl Rove, charging they had conspired to violate their constitutional rights.

The lawsuit, filed in Federal District Court, accused Mr. Cheney, Mr. Rove and the former Cheney aide, I. Lewis Libby Jr., of conspiring to destroy Ms. Wilson’s career by leaking her identity as an undercover C.I.A. operative to the press. It says the three men had conspired to punish Mr. Wilson for his public assertions that the Bush administration had twisted intelligence to justify the invasion of Iraq.

Speaking today, Ms. Wilson said, “I would much rather be continuing my career as a public servant than be a plaintiff in a lawsuit.”

“But I feel strongly, and justice demands that those who acted so harmfully against our national security must answer for their shameful conduct in court.”

Ms. Wilson made her remarks during a news conference at which her husband and a lawyer also spoke.

The civil lawsuit, which does not specify any amount of damages being sought, is the latest chapter in a complicated legal and political story that began when Valerie Plame, Ms. Wilson’s unmarried name, first appeared publicly in a newspaper column by Robert D. Novak on July 14, 2003.

The fallout from that disclosure led to an investigation by a special prosecutor into whether the leak violated any laws and whether Ms. Wilson’s name was leaked as part of a campaign to punish Mr. Wilson, a former ambassador, for his criticism of the White House.

The prosecutor, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, did not bring any charges in connection with laws that prohibit the willful disclosure of the identity of a Central Intelligence Agency officer.

Since her book deal bombed and nobody cares about washed up diplomats the Wilsons have to do something to keep their names in the spotlight. This reeks of desperation but their 15 minutes ended about 13 1/2 minutes ago, it won't help.

He sure did. Such as leaving the word "covert" out of the following sentence:

The prosecutor, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, did not bring any charges in connection with laws that prohibit the willful disclosure of the identity of a Central Intelligence Agency officer.

Valerie Wilson? Is she related to Valerie Plame which "Who's Who" lists as Joseph Wilson's wife and the CIA public relations office confirms was an employee of the CIA?

Putting aside all other absurdities, if Valerie Plame's name was not protected by law, I have a question:

Let's assume the administration was angry at Joe Wilson's behavior, and by extension Valerie Plame's behavior with respect to the Iraq war. Let's further assume the administration puts pressure on Plame or outright fires her from her CIA position. Is that something she could sue over? Certainly sounds like a political dispute which the administration can deal with any way it pleases.

Yet another liberal getting their way in the court of public opinion. Plame, Wilson, and their attorneys will be on TV every day, while the Republican government officials sit back and "refuse to comment because of a pending legial situation."

Notice how the libs get to say whatever they want, whereever they want, however they want, while the conservatives always come up with an excuse to be silent or let themselves be silenced.

Yet another instance of our side bending over and taking it up the chute from the Left.

Yet another instance of our side bending over and taking it up the chute from the Left.

Yet another instance of a poster overreacting to a worthless media event that nobody but political junkies care about.

After claims that these two secret exhibitionists would bring down the Bush Administration, they are reduced to suing public officials and begging for money to pay the lawyers, who apparently aren't willing to work on a contingency fee basis. The NY Slimes really should drop this played-out story and move on to a story that has more promise -- such as trying to prove Al Gore really won in 2000 or claiming Miami really beat the Buckeyes for the National Championship.

Was this a "news conference" or merely a speech with no probing questions permitted? The blogosphere has been filled to overflowing with serious questions that ought to be put to the Wilsons, but there don't seem to be many seriously-inquisitive news reporters these days, so it's unlikely that any such questions were asked. Based on the slim pickings in this article, there's no evidence that any such questions were asked.

I want this lawsuit to go partially forward. Far enough so that both have to answer questions under oath with perjury charges applicable.

That would be fun, but I don't think since they are originating the lawsuit, unless they were countersued, it will get that far.

I have a question for the Valerie and Joe Twit children.

"Why do you think your mother was so depressed with your birth that she went into postpartum depression for the rest of her life?" This broad actually thought (thinks) she was essential to the CIA's ability to function. Most government agencies are overrun with female desk jockies who have yet to deliver any valuable services to the government. Miss Valerie is no exception.

When Rove was cleared... the MSM said it was now “left up to them”... to follow up on the 'case'. The MSM/DNC follows the same template when their candidates lose elections... you never really lose if don't accept the results. And if all fails... take it to court.

This might boomerang big time on the wilsons. I wouldn't want to get on the witness stand and be questioned under oath if I was either of them. OTOH, it might be a big opportunity for the Bush admin to flush joe down the crapper for once and for all.

Everyone's been speculating why Novak wasn't included in the suit. I'm thinking that since Novak got verification of Plame's employment at the CIA from another CIA employee, that the Wilson's decided not to pursue Novak so as not to drag another CIA officer into court. As it is, the CIA person who confirmed her employment left the service not long after the story broke.
