Senate Denies Funds for New Border Fence("Kerriosis" spreads through Senate)
The Washington Times ^ | July 14, 2006 | Charles Hurt

Posted on 07/14/2006 5:42:08 AM PDT by kellynla

Less than two months after voting overwhelmingly to build 370 miles of new fencing along the border with Mexico, the Senate yesterday voted against providing funds to build it.

"We do a lot of talking. We do a lot of legislating," said Sen. Jeff Sessions, the Alabama Republican whose amendment to fund the fence was killed on a 71-29 vote. "The things we do often sound very good, but we never quite get there."

Mr. Sessions offered his amendment to authorize $1.8 billion to pay for the fencing that the Senate voted 83-16 to build along high-traffic areas of the border with Mexico. In the same vote on May 17, the Senate also directed 500 miles of vehicle barriers to be built along the border.

But the May vote simply authorized the fencing and vehicle barriers, which on Capitol Hill is a different matter from approving the federal expenditures needed to build it.

"If we never appropriate the money needed to construct these miles of fencing and vehicle barriers, those miles of fencing and vehicle barriers will never actually be constructed," Mr. Sessions told his colleagues yesterday before the vote.

Virtually all Democrats were joined by the chamber's lone independent and 28 Republicans in opposing Mr. Session's amendment to the Homeland Security Appropriations Act. Only two Democrats -- Sens. Ben Nelson of Nebraska and Thomas R. Carper of Delaware -- supported funding the fence.

All told, 34 senators -- including most of the Republican leadership -- voted in May to build the fence but yesterday opposed funding it.

The overall bill, which appropriates more than $32 billion to the Homeland Security Department, including $2.2 billion for border security and control, passed on a 100-0 vote last night.

could have built plenty for the price of the big, leaky Dig in Boston.

I think the fence we manned in Korea worked real well. Too bad we won't defend our own country like we do theirs.

Tell the folks at home in english you voted for the fence--and in spanish you stopped it by denying funding

Ah the wonders of bilingualism. This is the racket Arafat ran for years: giving the most blood-curdling speeches in Arabic, which his press office would then release in English perfectly suitable for a Mr. Rogers Fairy Tale!

Suppose it was only a matter of time before the Senate caught on.

There's already a superhighway from Mexico to Canada. The United States Interstate Highway System connects both places, as does the older United States Highway System, and the even older Mormon Trace.

I'm talking about the new one that has been proposed to facilitate trade between US, Canada, and Mexico.

"It is not just a tool, but also a symbol. It would be a sign of American isolationism and a closing off to the world. "

a wall also says....." our country is so grand that you need permission to come in".....

don't most nations in the world have some kind of barriers on their borders, especially where you have millions crossing over without permission and staying without permission....no other country in the world would put up with that.....

and how many people do you want stationed down there anyway?....it would take hundreds of thousands of troops to adequately protect our borders.....

Oh, yes, Interstate 69.

There's an incidental part that improves traffic with Mexico, but the most important part runs from Evansville, Indiana to Indianapolis.

And it's not a quarter-mile wide. That was just media hype that focused on the part in Texas that would parallel (and absorb) right of way already in place for oil and gas pipelines.

The route East of Dallas was pretty well laid out in the "Big Inch" and "Little Inch" projects. You might enjoy looking up that history. Here's a map:

Truth be known, I think there's some major election year politicking going on. The machinations these people go through leave most of the unwashed completely in the dark. Intentional? 'Spect so. The question I've had all along is, what's wrong with the immigration law(s) we have now? They(the Bush administration?) haven't lifted a finger to enforce them, why should we believe they will enforce any new immigration law(s)? Election year smoke and mirrors IMHO.

I can just about guarantee you there's more to their tacit approval of this illegal invasion than meets the eye. But, what is it???

Now I'm going to assume that you're a nice person, obey law and get along fabulously with your neighbors. Maybe you even borrow each others tools on occasion - so I'll ask: I'm going to assume that the answer to all the 'lock' questions is "YES". And we know why fences have "Gates" - so access can be controlled - by the owner, YOU. Considering the aforementioned I'm sure none of that has any effect on how your neighbors think of you. I bet they still feel you're a nice person.

However, the only people who would take offense at you using your locks and gate would be someone who wants to get access to your 'stuff' in a less than legal way. Those people are called criminals, and no law abiding person gives a SHIT what criminals thinks.

A country and its borders, and those who violate them are the same as a criminal and your property - only on a larger scale.

Now as to 'world opinion' - screw em. By 'world opinion' I mean Europe (they think they are 'the world'). They're stuck in a socialist hell hole called the EU so they take their anger, envy really, out on the greatest country IN the world. And it pisses them off to no end that we don't need them but they need us.

All the effort your putting in to all your belly-aching is a waste of your time. Just because the powers that be in DC can't come to an agreement doesn't mean construction isn't underway. You seem to have the opinion that nothings being done, that everythings at a standstill, but your 100% wrong.

Nevada isn't a border state but Ensign did vote Yea.

Indeed. There's something strange about this whole mess. The legalese coming out of the senate is patent boilerplate IMHO. A high rate of activity and mountains of paper, but in the end I suspect nothing good will come out of our pampered princes in the senate. They have grown too accustomed to their ivory towers and are out of touch with the people that sent 'em.

Re the tag line: The one thing we can say for "W" is that he is at least consistent. He never ran on cleaning up the border mess, BUT this was all before the illegals started mass demonstrations. They crapped in their mess kits when they took to the streets. The American people are a tolerant lot, maybe too tolerant, but when we started seeing Mexican flags being waved around by illegals demanding their "rights", well, it went downhill in a hurry.

Now that is brilliant research...

You should see the "sound barriers we have in parts of Houston. There is no way anyone is getting over those monsters.

Sound is much more important that dealing with the border catastrophe however.

Wow.. Thank god I am as high as a kite right now. Hey maybe I should turn on the TV and intentionally divert myself from the crucial problems of my country!!!

"All the effort your putting in to all your belly-aching is a waste of your time."

All the "belly-aching" as you refer to it must have done some good since the House & Senate are FINALLY debating actually FUNDING BUILDING A FENCE.

And GWB FINALLY admitted that the National Guard needed to be on the border even though we're still waiting for the entire contingent to actually SHOW UP!

"construction isn't underway?

well unless the Senate is prepared to PAY FOR THE CONSTRUCTION; Construction is NOT UNDERWAY!
Ya see people like me pressure those in office to do their jobs while people like you do what...besides criticize people like me.

Meanwhile, anytime you are ready to pony up to the teller and pay the SIXTEEN BILLION DOLLAR TAB illegals are costing those of us in CA who actually pay taxes you be sure and let us know.
We won't be holding our collective breath!

What have we here....a teacher who doesn't do her own homework?

If you'd care to check you'd see that I'm one of those you speak of in So. California that have the honour of paying those taxes.

Since you insist there is no construction going on, next time I see one of the NG's that have just returned from a stint doing construction work down at the border I'll have to call him a liar.

It wasn't original with me. Someone else mentioned sound barriers as being a good design to keep folks on one side and not the other.

All I did was go see how many of them we had.

I didn't know we had enough of them to line the border with Mexico and start on Canada, but we do.

Guess that means it can be done eh?!

A fence is a force multiplier. It allows you to protect more of the border with fewer guards.

I fully agree. Not much point in trying to bail out the boat if you let the leaks in the hull get worse. You have to shut the flow off at the source before you can handle the mess.
