Mark Bowden's book, "Guests of the Ayatollah: The First Battle in America's War with Militant Islam" (2006) dissects the Iran hostage crisis and its aftermath to the present day, including military details of the aborted secret rescue mission.
Don't be put off by the book's length; most entertaining, instructive and thorough, including individual hostage interrogations, escape attempts, Iranian culture quirks and Carter's real military and diplomatic choices, failures and behind-the-scenes maneuverings.
And you wouldn't want to miss Hamilton Jordan's vomiting in the White House toilet either.
Marking this for more review, thanks.
