--The worst anti-Semitic diatribe I've ever heard was from my ex-girlfriend's Greek grandparents. At the dinner table. For a half an hour.--

Probably brought up from birth with government encouraged anti-semitism. Many, probably most european countries have had official support for anti-semitism.

Israel to Greece: "We're not bending over for you or anyone else."

This news is not so bad. Now, if Greece had said to Israel "We're right behind you," THAT would be a cause for concern.

So when Isreal gave up the Gaza Strip, everyone said, "See Isreal, you make concessions and there will be peace. If there isn't, we'll understand if THEN you want to deal with force", but the THEN has happened and it's still not enough.

Since when is a foreign government (Hamas) capturing and killing soldiers of yours NOT a warlike action? Didn't Hamas 'declare' war with their actions? Of course not, because the world just wants Isreal to keep dying and we can stroke the peace train.

Bah. Go Isreal. You are in my prayers.

Dear useless Greece,

Tell you what, turn about is fair play. The next time there is an incident between Greece and Turkey, or you two get in another furball over Cyprus, Israel is allowed to tell you twenty times a day to "exercise restraint" and cluck disapproval at Greece for "using excessive, pointless force."

BTW, Greece, the best baklava I ever had was in Israel, made by Israelis, not Greeks. Put that in your bouzouki and play it!

don't be a jerk.

some of us are here on FreeRepublic.

think,

This may be a straw man comment to try and produce a diplomatic opening for other nations to step in.

Before you are so quick to embarass yourself, rember that while other nations were trying to extort more dollars out of the USA during the Iraq build up, Greece honored their treaties and fly over agreements. (use of bases etc.)

In addition, Greece provided two navy ships which freed up US military ships from the gulf.

We are supposed to have a higher level of discussion here not the juvinile blah blah of the left.

The comment was about Greeks' stance towards Israel and Jews, not the U.S....

I think most countries--including the US--are largely anti-Semitic and anti-Israel.

In defense of one Greek though, my girlfriend's grandmother is Greek. She married into a Jewish family and has been nothing but nice to me and my girlfriend (we're both Jewish).

newsflash,
there are regular incursions by turkey into greek airspace. They are daily, so your point is a big yawn.

Colin powel's incompetence in pushing the Coffi Annan Plan on cyprus is an added insult that has hurt our reputation in the region.

Greece has the largest military in the region and hands down the largest navy.

The United States has been essentially useless the the region and has abdicated its leadership role since 1964. The USA depends on Greece as a stabalizing buffer force for the balkans.

You also forget Cyprus is a BRITISH created problem.

American Liberals better take notes on how to react to and destroy evil. Are you listening, Ted Kennedy, Hillary and Bill, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Dickie Durbin, Dianne Feinstein, Feingold, Schumer, and let's not forget RINOs in that like McCain, Spector, Graham, Snow, et al.

You have no clue about Greeks or those of Greek decent.

You can provide a loony supremacist anecdote of any group to any other group.

This is only a hollow statement on the surface which seems to carry a clear subtantive message between the lines. Attention: return the hostage or more "excessive force" will be used until the hostage is SAFELY returned.

>>>Perhaps they have similar advice for India...>>>

NO, see everyone has the 'authority' to retaliate for terror attacks, EXCEPT Isreal. Of course there is a statute of limitations on this. 2 years seems to be the limit. After 2 years, you are required to forget it ever happened and act as the Muslims are our friends.

In defense of one Greek though, my girlfriend's grandmother is Greek. She married into a Jewish family and has been nothing but nice to me and my girlfriend (we're both Jewish).

Which proves the point that in every nation or religion there are good people and bad people. Fact is, each of us has good and bad within ourselves.

That being said, over time and in general Greece has not been the friendliest country, nor Greeks the friendliest people, toward Jews and either the ancient or modern nation of Israel. The story of Chanukah is of Jewish rebels in Greek-occupied Israel fighting for their independence against a ruler who had pigs sacrificed in the Holy of Holies of the Temple. That was roughly 2,170 years ago, so I don't pin that on anyone or any government operating today, but it is part of an historical pattern of behavior (albeit not so extreme at all times). Balancing that off is the behavior of Alexander the Great, who was extremely friendly toward Jews and respectful of our religious practices. To this very day, many Jewish boys are named Alexander for this reason.

The real bottom line here - IMHO - is that the present government of Greece is not at all friendly toward Israel, and its call for restraint on both sides does a serious disservice to the victim in this situation, Israel.

"It is vital, to stop the (situation) worsening, Hizbullah must immediately release the soldiers taken hostage,"

TRANSLATION: Hammas, you are getting you posterior kicked return the hostages and end this stupidity.

"....calls on the government of Israel to avoid the use of excessive and pointless force which cannot provide a solution to the problem."

TRANSLATION: Israel, make sure you shots are accurate if you are going to use overwhelming force. Hammas, you are out gunned and have no hope of comming out of this alive.

Footnote: I think what is realy going on is the fact that ALL the nations in the area are putting their forces on alert. More inclursion flights from turkey, more defense flights from Greece. The green zone in cyprus gets a little more fortified. Turkey starts to worry if they divert forces the kurds will act up. and on and on...
