The way I look at it, we have new allies and have trained them to fight in situ. And we have Iran surrounded. Here's a story from Paul Bremer's book that refutes the idea that Iraqi shia will line up with Iran. One candidate was deemed unacceptable for some council he was putting together because Iraqis thought of him as Iranian. Bremer demured, "His family has been in Iraq for 300 years." There is no love lost betwen Iraq and Iran.
