Absolutely stupid.

It's not the $3 pair of socks... it's the 20 other items the person will likely steal (somewhere else) that make prosecution worth it.

Still, a single employee walking off with a $999 flatscreen TV is much more important to stop than 333 kids stealing a $3 pair of socks.

It takes similar resources to prosecute the thieves too, and that employee who can steal the good stuff can probably steal a whole truckload you know.

For the most part Wal-Mart's security system is sufficient to stop almost all petty theft anyway.
