AG: Adhesive failure target of tunnel probe By Dave Wedge Boston Herald Chief Enterprise Reporter
Wednesday, July 12, 2006 - Updated: 06:47 PM EST
Attorney General Tom Reilly said today the investigation into the Big Dig tunnel collapse is focused primarily on the possible failure of adhesive anchors, a flaw detected as far back as 1999.
The AGs preliminary findings mirror a Bostonherald.com report yesterday that first identified adhesive anchor failure in the section of the tunnel where 38-year-old Milena Del Valle of Jamaica Plain was killed Monday night. Yesterdays Bostonherald.com report also revealed the Mass Pike spent at least $439,000 in 2004 to replace adhesive anchors in the tunnel ceiling.
We have information and documents that a problem with the anchor bolts in this area was identified in 1999, Reilly said in a press conference this afternoon near the accident scene. It was not only identified but there was a plan to address that problem. We are trying to find out now, was that plan implemented.
Reilly said that his own team of engineers is focusing on hardware and is taking control of the scene, categorizing evidence.
A source said that Bechtel officials arrived at the scene this afternoon but they were prohibited from entering by investigators.
U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan was also scheduled to arrive at the accident scene this afternoon.
They are going to have to check every single one of those anchoring bolts. I'm not a mechanical or civil engineer, but that would have to be one heckuva an epoxy to hold up to the stress of several tons of tension over a long period of time.
Um... Shouldn't they have found that out after it was supposed to have been done?
I knew it. The problem was found under the Clinton Administration, but Bush ignored all the warnings and failed to provide adequate funds to fix the problem.
Tons of concrete ceiling fall down.
Government concludes: Adhesive Failure.
NSDA.
What does the "DA" stand for? You can do a "rhymes with" if necessary. ;)
Contractors, sub contractors, sub sub contractors......and you have billions wasted, and lives lost.
Souds like brain dead engineering to me.
Nein Schisse Dum ARSE
I couldn't believe they did that. Amazing...
Nein Schisse Dum ARSE
So, this whole thing is held together with some kind of super glue?
How much do you want to bet MMM or whoever made the epoxy never authorized it's use in an environment like that or they were never consulted to begin with...
(with thermal expansion and contraction of the material it is anchored to and that material being substandard to begin with... WHY not through bolt??)
Now Mass gets to harvest the fruits of their corruption with the original surface roads bulldozed and the tunnel closed ,, commutes must be REAL FUN....
G1
(steely)
If the BIG DIG construction team had used staples,
then Reilly UNFORTUNATELY would have gone after
the staple maker, too (unless they were also rapists).
Too bad that all Americans must pay for the corruption of these criminals.
