Q101 Silences Shock Jock 'Mancow'
CBS ^ | 7/11/06 | Jon Duncanson

Posted on 07/11/2006 9:13:51 PM PDT by paltz

(CBS) CHICAGO There’s a big shake-up in Chicago radio. He’s one of the most popular and polarizing personalities in town. Erich “Mancow” Muller has been let go from Q101.

CBS 2’s Jon Duncanson reports the man known for his mouth has been silenced…at least for now.

“When your contract's up sometimes you step up, you know?” Muller said. “You move on to better things.”

Whether on purpose or a Freudian slip, “Mancow’s Morning Madhouse” brought up the “C” word on-air Tuesday morning.

“It is not my last day,” Muller told CBS Tuesday morning. “I have a contract through August and I plan on fulfilling my contract. What they plan on is up to them.”

“I think it was just the best thing to do to say ‘Today was your last day,’” Q101 General Manager Marv Nyren later told CBS 2 News.

By Tuesday afternoon, the station had posted a statement on their Web site that Mancow has no future at the station starting now.

Muller has thrived on all sorts of controversy over the years, the last eight at Q101 (WKQX-FM). It has translated into high ratings.

But the station says advertisers weren’t flocking to what they considered a “shock jock,” and Mancow’s show wasn’t fitting into the station’s alternative rock format.

“So we said ‘It's time to make a change.’ Either we do something with the morning show or the rest of the radio station, and I guess the other 20 hours of the day won,” Nyren said.

“I'm like a white, ugly, skinny, masculine Oprah,” Muller has said in the past.

He has exploited that fact in nationally syndicating his show.

It is clear Mancow was going to leave the station when his contract ended in late August.

“I got bigger plans,” he said. “We're taking the show national. And I don't know what they're gonna do but...I wish ‘em luck.”

For his bosses, “national” was part of the problem.

“He was doing a radio show that was just as good for a station in Tucson, Ariz., as it was for Chicago,” Nyren said. "The problem from our point of view is that we wanted a show for Chicago.

Q101 says they’ll have an all-new morning show up and running Sept. 18. As for Mancow, he’s confident he’ll be on the air again in Chicago. If he knows, he’s not saying when.

Naw . . . what you are is a poor imitation of Howard Stern.

I never really cared for him while he was on locally in the KC area, or once he got syndicated. He seemed to be nothing more than (at first) a Johnny Dare or Randy Miller (local KC morning show DJs) wanna-be, without the charm, and eventually a Howard Stern wanna-be, all the while denegrading Stern (and Dare, while he was in KC).

I've tried listening to his syndicated show, but it's just too disjointed for me.

Stern disappeared from the face of the earth after he went to Sirius. He lost 80% of his audience since they were too cheap to pay for Sirius.

The most recent figures I've heard is that 3.5 million new subscribers came on board since Stern went to Sirius, bringing their total to 4 million subscribers. Four million times $12.95 per month is not exactly chump change. And they project up to six million subscribers by the end of the year.

Plus, you can listen to Sirius' music channels and Stern's two channels online. As a subscriber, you get a lot of entertainment bang for $12.95/mo.

Mancow is talking about this on Fox & Friends now, about how he's trying to do a good, positive show and the Chicago radio station didn't like it. I'm hearing he's thinking there's some anti-Christian bias there, too.

Just saw him on F&F. His bosses did not like the fact that 9/11 changed him. He is now married, has children, and is a Christian - and lets everyone know that. He had rather talk politics than just do music.

He stated once that satellite radio would not last. He said he was waiting for the next high-tech innovation - and implied it would not be too long.

I can't remember the source for sure, but I think it was Groucho that said that there are only two things in the world -- funny and not funny. Mancow is funny. (Al Franken is not funny.)

He'll be on XM or Sirius by the fall. He has some national notoriety due to the fact that he used to make numerous appearances on Fox & Friends.

The "C" word is nasty, but... It's pathetic that uttering the "C" word is considered worse than taking the Lord's name in vain.

I've noticed that the "BS" word has been excised from "Money" on most rock stations now. I mean, they let Howard Stern air all sorts of pornographic garbage, and they take "BS" out of "Money"?

When seventh graders have to choose between potty talk or a dime bag, the dime bag will win every time.

Howard Stern - Mancow Muller...

Howard Stern... maybe funny once a month... the rest of it is boring as hell... rectum, penis, vagina, mammary glands is all he can talk about... Howard is an empty headed jerk...

Mancow Muller... funny maybe twice a week... great phone scams... good at paintball...

Didn't Howard used to be a South Park conservative before reading Franken's book?

He started changing before that - it was around the time he made his movie and wanted to become a movie start. The Hollywood liberal mafia told him how it was, and if he wanted to do business in that town, he had to buy into the liberal dogma.

It started out with him being more pro-gay and he recently came full circle when he decided that he was now against the death penalty.
