Or how about the switch from R-12, to R-134 Refrigerant in Automotive AC. It's 30% less efficient, thus requires larger components, is prone to leakage, is explosive, corrosive ... and worst of all, the "hole in the ozone layer" pseudo-science that the switch was based on turns out NOT TO EXIST.
