School District Bans Mouth Jewelry, Other Items

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Arlington school district has expanded its dress codes to include bans on mouth jewelry known as "grills" and the earlobe-stretching practice known as gauging.

"The district is having to respond to fads because they've become distracters or a safety hazard for those around them," said Malcolm Turner, the district's executive director of student services.

The nearby Irving, Grand Prairie and DeSoto districts also ban grills, and some also address gauging -- the process of placing increasingly large items in the ears to stretch the lobes.

But students said the body modification is simply self-expression.

"Really, a grill is just like an earring. It's fashion," said Sam Houston junior Devonte Wright, 16.

Others said it was unfair to ban such jewelry after students had purchased the expensive items, such as a $200, six-tooth white-gold diamond-cut grill. The price ranges from $180 to $3,000 at J's Grill in Arlington.

"If they bought it, they should be able to wear it," said Sam Houston senior LaVeda Antwine, 17.

But school officials said they hoped to teach students that life would require them to follow specific regulations in specific settings.

"We want to instill in them a sense of modesty and a sense of community," said school board trustee Gloria Pena. "We're preparing them for the work force, and in the work force there are rules."

And in the interests of being clear regardin my previous posts, I believe that AthEIsm Is a religion. It's a religion that centers on a disbelief in Creationism and God in general. It's impossible to believe in nothing. And scientifically, I have never understood how God is somehow harder to believe in than some freak one in nine hundred billion trillion times itself chance that "BANG", everything just happened. The infinite size and diversity and contrast of the endless boundaries of space and its contents, the complexity of DNA, the fragile balance of Earth's position around the Sun allowing a livable ecosystem, that just a few miles closer or further and Earth would be ashes or an ice cube. Or how instance after instance in the Bible is proved as more and more archeological digs take place.

For example, the ruins of Soddom and Gamorra and the other destroyed cities described in the Bible have been excavated and found to be covered by Walnut or larger size pumice / Volcanic rock, otherwise known as "brimstone", and there is no volcanic vent or volcano, active or extinct, within 1,000 miles of those sites, and matter of that size could never travel over a 1,000 miles without friction and gravity bringing it down before reaching that distance. And that volcanic material is only found in the areas of those destroyed cities, not the entire region at that same geological levels when compensating for erosion. So if there is no God, then that is the first ever instance of selective volcanic destruction. So if no God, then volcanos are sentient, and they don't like homosexualty either. :)

You're certainly free to believe that atheism is a religion. You're wrong, but it's your belief.

I'm done with this discussion. I'm not in the mood to get into a long discussion of atheism today.

You THINK I'm wrong. That's your opinion, not fact. I respect your opinion, it would be nice if you would do the same. It was Christians who fought, founded, and preserved this country. Not Atheists. That little fact will never be deleted or altered. Have a good day. :)
