My letter to the editor- we'll see if they actually publish it:

It's no surprise to any right-thinking or objective Gazette reader that the paper would decide to pull Ann Coulter's column. This was bound to happen sooner or later. However, in explanation of the move, Mike Deupree's opinion piece about Coulter's ouster stated that 'the controversy swirling around her overshadowed what she said and deprived readers of a strong conservative voice.' Yes, that's right, controversy is now a reason to cancel a respected national columnist. And because liberal columnists never write anything controversial, such as, say advocating murder of the unborn by pulling their limbs apart in the womb, this all makes perfect sense.

Whoever said "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" must certainly not have been a liberal -or a an employee of the Cedar Rapids Gazette.

A fellow pointed out to me that there was a difference between Evolution and Darwinism.

Evolution is something studied using Hudson's Bay company fur returns, or Measles in Baltimore records, and computer models of predator-prey interactions, or fossils dug up at the La Brea Tar Pits. You know, science.

Darwinism is something you do with a microphone. Propaganda, indoctrination.

I am not an evolutionary scientist, but I used to work for one as a programmer.

Current evolutionary theory suggests that there are stabilizing forces which slow evolution when large populations are available. Mating selection avoids critters who have unusual growths, ugly warts, extra limbs where there is an alternative.

Where populations are small, there is no alternative, evolutionary change happens quickly.

In other words, there are fat years, and lean years. In the fat years there is little change. In the lean years few survive, but if a critter with changes survives, then its offspring will lead to a new species.

Puntuated equilibrium, I think they call it. No, Darwin didn't think of that. That is why it is not Darwinism, but it is evolution.
