Dress code takes sparkle out of students' smiles

Arlington ISD: Officials limit mouth, ear jewelry

11:26 PM CDT on Sunday, July 9, 2006

By TOYA LYNN STEWART / The Dallas Morning News

Kayden Dorman BARBARA DAVIDSON/DMN Body piercer Kayden Dorman disagrees with the Arlington school district's new dress code: "If they're allowing people to wear earrings, they should allow them to wear bigger earrings."

Karrick Senegar says rapping and grills go together like cars and tires.

That's why the 16-year-old aspiring rapper and Arlington student spent $200 in April on the mouth jewelry known as a grill. But the Sam Houston High School junior won't be able to flash his six-tooth white-gold diamond-cut grill around campus come August.

The Arlington school district has changed its dress code to ban the trendy mouth jewelry. Also added to the unacceptable list are tall tees – oversized shirts that hang to the knees – and the practice of stretching out earlobes, sometimes called gauging.

I pierced my own ears in 1972 and my father was very disappointed in me. When my hippy brother pierced his ear a few years later, it really damaged his relationship with my father. A woman with pierced ears was one thing, but a man with a pierced ear was simply unacceptable.

$200 for gold and diamonds? How long before his teeth turn green?

I suspect that many a teenager today will have rapidly-healing noses and lips and will be paying for laser removal of tattoos when they advance into the workforce. Nothing like working for a living to shock you!

About two weeks ago I took my daughter to Hot Topic. As we were paying for her items we started chatting with the cashier. She had the stretched-out earlobes. She leaned over the counter, looked my daughter straight in the eye and said, "Never, EVER get this done. They never go back. EVER! You *WILL* regret it for the rest of your life if you do."

I loved it.

These people obviously didn't get enough attention when they were young.

Most tattoos just look like dark blobs anyway. I don't understand why people want them when you can't even make half of them out. I can't imagine it all over a saggy, wrinkly body.

Still a hippie. Carpenter, vegetarian and complete pacifist. Does not acknowledge that we are in a fight for our culture. Nice guy, but I wouldn't want him to be the person standing between me and someone who wanted to kill me. My sister is the same way as well as my other brother. I am the only one who turned out, even remotely, like my upbringing. The 60's-70's were very destructive to the well-being and continued strength of our country.

It is long past time for schools to enforce some type of dress code for their students. People can bleat and blather all they like, but high school students are NOT adults and should not be allowed to act like them.

His parent(s) will think he is going to far when they have to pay over $3000 for a visit to an orthodonist.

Yes!! I remember telling an old boyfriend years ago that I HATED the 60's and that they were the worst thing that ever happened to our country. He looked at me with a puzzled look on his face. I hope he eventually figured out how right I was. LOL

I've told both my kids that they will not be allowed to "express" themselves through their appearance until they can first express the given idea in both written and spoken form eloquently. Appearance expression will be forbidden until other forms of expression are mastered. Most kids (amd parents) have it backwards.

Even after they submit their written and oral essays about "the injustice of the world" or their inner angst, anything that permanently alters the body that God gave them is expressedly forbidden.

For instance, purple hair will be OK, as long as they can coherently and persuasively express just what message the purple hair is supposed to convey.
