PEEKSKILL, N.Y. (AP) — It's been around for a lot of history, but now, unfortunately, it IS history.
A 72-foot-tall white oak tree that was used to hang a recruiter for the British army during the Revolutionary War is coming down, declared beyond saving after being hit by lightning last month.
The tree, one of the largest in Westchester County, sits outside Peekskill High School. Schools Superintendent Judith Johnson told The Journal News of Westchester for Sunday's editions, "This is a sad moment for all of us," adding that the tree was "a reminder of the past and the importance our country places on its freedom."
Hopefully, someone will make something meaningful out of the wood. It would be a shame if they simply ground it up into mulch.
Hanging a mere recruiter? Seems a bit harsh. No doubt the right side won in the end though.
a month seems like maybe too short a time to declare it a goner. A neighbors tree was struck; and seemed like it was not going to come back the next year, so he downed it only to find that it was sprouting again at the top....all of the leaves had shriveled and browned when it was struck, but they never fell off.

Mature White Oaks are a treasure; they should give the tree two years to see if it is dead. They did as much for Franco!!!
Wait, can't we hang some MSM traitors from it before we bring it down?? Hang the entire editorial staff of the NY SLimes and then make commemorative plaques out of the wood.
I have a suggestion - how about using the wood to construct the gallows to be used to hang Saddam Hussein?
I wonder if they could take a branch for a graft or any seeds for new trees. Let's see what they look like in 30 years.

Don't give up hope. Saw it into timbers for a gallows and erect it on West 43rd Street. Then use it and repeat as necessary.
Maybe we can send the wood to Ithaca and the universities there can build a gallows to hang conservative guest speakers.
Someone was hanged in this country???..OH the horror!...find his kin and pay them millions to compensate their misery and dispair!
