SIERRA VISTA — Republican gubernatorial challenger Don Goldwater made a stump run through Cochise County this weekend to expound on his border platform.
Goldwater, who is from Phoenix, was quick to say he’s the only candidate who favors building a wall on the border to prevent illegal immigration. On Friday night at the Outback Steakhouse in Sierra Vista, he had dinner with friends and talked with the Herald/Review.
Goldwater said the source of our dysfunctional Southwest border is a “supply and demand issue.”
While the Arizona National Guard is deployed to the local international border, Goldwater said they are serving in administrative roles but should be doing what the guard was created to do — bear arms to enforce the border.
If it became law, House Bill 2577, which Goldwater supports, would make it a felony to illegally enter the United States in Arizona.
HB 2577 is not an “unfunded mandate,” he said. Its implementation would cost about $350 million, which he said is a worthwhile price tag compared to a price tag approaching $3 billion to “educate, medicate and incarcerate” illegal immigrants in Arizona.
“Number one, I’m the only one calling for a fence. Number two, I’m the only one who is willing to put money down into the local communities and the sheriff’s offices,” Goldwater said.
Thirdly, he supports prosecuting business who violate hiring laws to the fullest extent, and ensuring municipalities are in compliance with immigration laws, too.
Goldwater said he is a member of the Minuteman Project.
“We need a wall now,” he said.
On Saturday, the candidate was scheduled to travel through Bisbee, Douglas and Tombstone.

Well, the dark horse candidates come from somewhere ... just when they are needed most. Sounds like he has his head on straight.
