SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. - Bolstered by National Guard troops, the U.S. Border Patrol in Arizona picked up significantly fewer illegal immigrants in June than it did during the same period last year, according to agency data.
However, immigrant rights advocates doubt that lower numbers in Arizona reflect a significant decrease in illegal crossings.
The data come nearly two months after President Bush asked states to send soldiers to the Mexican border to help the federal government's effort to curb illegal immigration.
The Border Patrol's Yuma Sector saw the most dramatic decrease in migrant arrests, posting a 48 percent drop from 11,522 in June 2005 to 6,030 last month, the agency reported Thursday. The larger Tucson Sector, which covers all but the state's western border areas, reported capturing 25,000 illegal immigrants last month, a 21 percent drop from the more than 31,000 caught in June 2005.
Jennifer Allen of the Border Action Network human rights group suggests that the decline doesn't indicate that the nation's borders are more secure.
"Migrant movement is shifting, but I don't think it's being deterred," she said. "It's only deterred in that people are not crossing in that particular spot. But people are still crossing, and they're doing it in other more dangerous and more risky areas."
Rescues of migrants and deaths along the Arizona border increased or remained unchanged compared with the same period a year earlier, and immigrant rights groups blamed the increased border security for riskier behavior by migrants.
The Tucson Sector saw migrant deaths rise from 18 in June 2005 to 23 last month, spokesman Gustavo Soto said Thursday.
Soto said the agency tries to inform migrants about the dangers of illegally crossing the border, and it is wrong to blame the deaths on the Border Patrol's activities.
"The Border Patrol doesn't push anybody out into these outlying areas and we don't lead anybody to their deaths," Soto said. "It's the smugglers who do it."
"The Border Patrol's Yuma Sector saw the most dramatic decrease in migrant arrests, posting a 48 percent drop "
And this done with a bare minimum of effort. But we can't get rid of illegals, can we? Dear God in Heaven!!
There's a world of difference between securing the border so they can't get in, and rounding up and deporting 12-20 million people.
But this shows how effective securing the border is, so...let's secure it!
On this we agree.
Bump!
Who could possibly be AGAINST securing our nation's border?
Let's lower our IQ's for a minute and pretend we're liberals (not socialists, but liberals--because we know why socialists don't care about a secure border). Now, if you're a liberal, wouldn't you want the border secured so cheap immigrant labor won't sneak in and steal jobs from the poor Americans the Evil Corporations are trying to keep down?
The only people who can possibly be against securing the borders are those far leftists who simply don't CARE about the facts. It's amazing how many I run into up here (Boston/Cambridge) who are articulate, and have obviously memorized all the Chomsky-Franken-type talking points, but when you say something obvious like "What about the illegals who take jobs away from the poor?" they look at you like they'd never HEARD of such a thing, because jobs just materialize from thin air, or something.
Being against securing the borders is like being against locking your doors when you leave your car--it's so relatively easy, why WOULDN'T you, rather than have to deal with the repercussions later?
Why do libs support a massive invasion of Mexican illegals? For votes. Then the GOP ought to go after current Dem voters, who are harmed by the illegal invaders and point out how the Dem's/libs are selling them out.
The entire illegal invader movement is a monstrous plot against the sovereignty of the United States.
The accommodating traitors, unfortunately, include most of those who are supposedly serving us in our present government.
The communists are alive and flourishing within our borders (along with the islamic killers) and they're leading the Aztlan movement. This is the subversive group using immigration to break away the Southwest from the United States to destroy us.
Their goal: divide and conquer, in the name of international socialism/communism.
When one considers that California, the sixth largest economy in the world, being joined to Arizona, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas the puzzle becomes complete and the realization finally sinks in that losing control of this vast area leads directly to the destruction of America.
Our government encourages the invasion of our country and the Aztlan treachery. This scheme is so obvious it has to be by design. To attempt explanation of our government leaders' complicity defies all logic.
Americans who truly care about their destiny and that of our nation need to be aware and to resist this insipid attack on our nation's sovereignty in every way possible.
It is possible to deport and to completely discourage this invasion of the U. S. A. by the dregs of Mexican and South American society. Many of these commit the sexual crimes, the murders, the stealing and the waste of whatever resources cities and states have.
Get them out the way we hunt down murderers and other assorted criminals: one at a time if necessary!
