North Korea may have gambled -- and lost -- while playing a game of nuclear/missile chicken with the United States. The reclusive communist state, the only remaining Stalinist regime on the planet, can hardly feed its population. Thousands are reported to starve to death every winter, yet this has not prevented Pyongyang from spending billions of dollars to build a nuclear deterrent, and a delivery system it hopes would reach the continental United States.
~Snip~ This latest move by North Korea will give the United States a golden opportunity to step up its military presence in and around the Pacific area. Following this latest North Korean stunt, Washington should find it relatively easy in convincing Tokyo for the need to strengthen military cooperation between the United States and Japan.
As one analyst put it, Japan could well become the England of the Pacific -- an island fortress and a staunch ally of the United States who sees its own security and well being tied-in to a strong -- and permanent -- American presence in the Pacific region.
Similarly, the Bush administration will make certain to stress the dangers associated with North Korea's missile maneuvers, playing up the fact that Pyongyang is now within reach of Alaska, Hawaii and possibly even the west coast of the continental United States.
Luckily for North Korea their missile test flunked. But assume for a moment that the North Koreans had succeeded; that, in and of itself, would not necessarily mean there is suddenly any real and present danger to the security of the United States given the tremendous imbalance of power between the two countries.

"But North Korea's bluff may have been a blunder. The Bush administration will make a point to stress the dangers associated with this latest North Korean proliferation, playing up the fact that Pyongyang is now within reach of the west coast of continental United States, not to mention Japan and other Asian countries. North Korea's gamble will have paid dividend -- but to the United States."
They have been in reach of Alaska and Hawaii for some years now.
But otherwise, good article.
Very good read, credible and encouraging.
Hey, Kimmy Boy. Just what the hell do you expect to gain or prove by trying to threaten the world's most powerful nation on Earth? You twit.BTW, your army marches as if the troops have fire ants up their arse.
I am not convinced that NK has the A-Bomb yet.
The detractors of "star wars" are looking pretty stupid (and short sighted-see ANWR) now. I hope Rove will make use of this in '06-and '08. Please make an ad of Maddy Halfbright toasting Kim Jong Ill, superimposed over the missile launch. And one of clinton vetoing ANWR drilling with signs of $3.50 gas in the back round. Talk about a target rich environment. Even the Republicans (I hope) are not stupid enough to pass on this opportunity (I hope).
Yeah, I'm not really that convinced either. But this article is great in pointing out how Kim Jong Il must have known we would have obliterated his country if his missile hit us, and therefore, he was only looking for money from the US. This, predictably, failed.
Not to change the subject, but one should never underestimate Republican stupidity.
blahblah
During the Korean way Mao welcomed a nuclear strike by the USA on China, Mao believed he might lose hundreds of millions but that the USSR would then enter the war and give him the bomb too.
These guys do not value life as we westerners (including Russia) do.
I agree.
Sigh.
"The North Koreans are by nature survivalists and not suicidal."
That's what they used to say about Saddam.
"Neither can he pretend the United States would hesitate for a New York minute to obliterate the entire North off the map in the event of a launch on an American, or allied position."
Does anyone really believe that we would drop the bomb on him even if he used the bomb? I don't think our leaders have the guts to do that, and you can be certain that he doesn't believe it.
"The North continues to earn lucrative sums of money in exchange for selling its missile technology to a number of developing countries. Pyongyang has earned some $1.5 billion annually from the export of its missile technology and spare parts."
Unless we take him out, his a-bombs (or his a-bomb technology) will be showing up all over the world. And I don't think we're going to take him out.
They misunderestimated Pres. Bush once again.
I do. In a heartbeat
