Obviously, my preference is for the GOP to go on the offensive and annihilate the Rats, letting the chips fall where they may.Absolutely. The Dems deserve annihilation.
Odds are, if they employ this strategy, they'd be sitting prettier than ever.
That depends on their agenda at the time. If they're positioned on the center, they're toast. Conservatives would leave in droves. The farther to the right they are, the more would stay.
And if they don't [end up in a better position], who gives a Rat's ass -- the country will be better for it.
I think the GOP gives a rats ass, in a big way. I wonder how much of the GOP's goals have to do with their concern for the good of the country, and how much has to do with political advantage. This is exactly why they keep propping up the Dems. They refuse to take an agressive strategy.
Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read my weird little theory. :)
They refuse to take an agressive strategy. Oh, but they do have an aggressive strategy -- to get 50.005% of the electoral votes every four years. Period.
They have a very aggressive strategy toward conservatives:
- Slap down conservative primary candidates, including sitting incumbents, like Bill McCollum down in Florida -- who was one of the Clinton impeachment managers!
- Beat up on conservative voices like Ann Coulter's, disowning her loudly like one former RNC flack just did who used to work for Ronnie and Bush 41, in an op-ed that the Trotskyites at the Houston Chronicle were only too happy to run over the weekend [and if that op-ed didn't have a return address marked "The Establishment GOP," I don't know what would],
- Keep conservatives bottled up, frustrated, and isolated while you get points with the squishy middle for being "reasonable" -- i.e. using conservatives the way civil-rights leaders used Rap Brown and Malcolm "X", "the other brothers",
- Bait the conservatives to the polls every four years with a long list of red-meat (but very deniable at the national level) social-issue state constitutional amendments and referenda (reminds me of that old Bill Cosby standup bit about "Hofstra"),
- Keep them chained up out in the Dawg Pound like the manor's hounds the rest of the time.
At least, it just seems aggressive to me. Maybe someone else has another idea.
