A lone protester stood on the sidewalk outside the church before the talk began. He identified himself only as Richard, and said he was a 30-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps visiting his sons who live on the island. The man held a sign reading “Cindy, your actions dishonor your son.”
After two verbal confrontations between the man and lecture attendees, Nantucket Police officer Howard McIntyre asked him to move to the other side of the street.
“My sergeant drove past and said it was fine as long as it was passive,” McIntyre said, adding that his supervisor ordered him to ask the man to cross the street.
Sheehan blames President Bush for her son’s death and called him “a dictator,” a claim that was met with applause.
“George Bush is an insane person who wants to be a monarch,” she said. “People in power are soul-stealers.”
