They should receive nothing less than a maximum sentence. They should be made an example of.

The complaint said Alvarez and McClaren brought two smugglers across the border into the United States in a government vehicle in September 2004 and released one of them from federal custody three months later in exchange for $10,000.

So they aren't going to be prosecuted for smuggling aliens, for releasing criminals from custody, or for the other charges besides bribery and filing false tax returns?

From another article today in the San Diego County North County Times:

"Alvarez and McClaren, both from Imperial, were indicted March 9 and charged with
conspiracy to smuggle aliens for financial gain,
conspiracy to commit bribery,
bribery,
making a false statement,
smuggling aliens for financial gain,
filing a false tax return and
criminal forfeiture."
