I have a feeling that if President Bush called N. Korea and said "Have a nice day"...they would consider that an act of war.

Your thinking is muddled. There is no new cold war. We CAN take care of these idiots and we don't need nujes to do it. Neither China nor Russia will do a thing to stop us except mouth off about how we are imperialist, capitilist running dogs, as they always have. Yes, it is realistic to think we can fry(non nuke) these idiots with out much trouble.

Saying any economic sanctions or pressure would be considered an act of war.
They also said there is no way they are going to give up enrichment, much less give up enrichment as a precondition to starting talks.
We are just putting off the enevitable, pretending to not know what we see right in front of our face.
One can only hope we are using the time to prepare ourselves for what 'smart people' must be able to see, since its so clear to schmucks like me.
This is what North Korea says. They certainly have a lot of artillery aimed at Seoul. If we did attack it would have to be a very coordinated attack. It might also require a lot of intelligence work to neutralize the nuclear threat. Nonetheless, artillery can be destroyed and nuclear weapons can be targeted.
I guess the questions we have to be asking ourselves is: 1) Is this situation going to get any better in the future? 2) Is North Korea going to be in a better strategic position in the future? If the answers are no and yes (which I think they are, because Mr. Ronery will then be a psychopath with *working* ICBMs), then we had definitely better consider some sort of regime change.

I gather NK wants its ASSets in the Macau Bank thawed. It's hard to make boom-booms without money. Soon it will be hard to have the energy to threaten to make war without food. Life has hard choices for many folks today, it seems.
The reformation of something strikingly similar to the Axis Powers? Yeah, I've considered that. If we attack North Korea, it is certainly a possibility that despots of the world will once again unite. We may have to deal simultaneously with Burma, Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba, and North Korea. Thank God Bush didn't scrap the 2 front campaign military doctrine.
I was looking at the pictures that were posted here by link to another site of a tourists pictures of NK. One of the pictures that they guide told this person were forbidden was one of a tenement building. Each window in the building had an air conditioner installed.
Why is this significant? The chances are that if these people rated an air conditioner, they were probably skilled labor of the government - scientists.
You could drive through the rest of the city and not see another window mounted air conditioner, but this building had one in every window.
The "ronery runt" should blow up real good.
Problem is this would be three and bigger than the first two combined. I just don't think we could do it. Manning and equipment are stretched thin now.
They want war to save face and go out in a blaze of glory rather than implode...

I'm not sure about #1. There is a race for which will happen first, NK getting a working NUCLEAR ICBM force or the regime sipmly imploding and Kim hanging from a (non-working) lamp post.
I don't know which will occur. But the people of Korea are close to the end, and with good strong sanctions, if put in place now, we'd see them to their last grain of rice shortly. Will they then turn their guns on us or their masters?
How 'bout we simply ask them? "Come into the light, people of NK! We'll feed you, soon as Kim and his cronies are greasy spots!"
and the balance of power in the region could be forever tilted in favor of China. If Seoul endured 24 hours of artillery bombardment the whole deal security deal for the region gets re-written and the US is probably out.

My thinking is muddled? I think you look at it from one dimension.
We've got 130k troops in Iraq and even though it's the right thing, it's a big drain on us militarily and economically. The world would never agree to military action against N. Korea, so we'd go it alone. And if we attack, you can be sure that the 5 or 6 nukes they do have will be detonated somewhere not in N. Korea. Japan and S. Korea come to mind. N. Korea isn't a paper tiger. They have squandered all of their assets building a military, and they are supported by China. Attacking them would come with a significant cost in casualties.
So, at that point China, S. Korea, and Japan are angered at the US by their action.
This isn't cowboys and indians. It's not your little WWII battle set. It's real, and complicated. But thanks for trying.
I have to agree with you there. We would need our allies to actually pull some of their weight. I think we could count on Japan to do some heavy lifting against North Korea if they alter their Constitution (which they are now seriously considering). We could also count on the British to help out somewhere else. The big question is what would the rest of Europe do? Would most of them try to sit it out and try not to get dirty? Or would they realize that their future was at stake?
I don't see any alternative to taking out Kim Jong-il.....
