Colin Powell falls ill during dinner
Aspen Daily News ^ | July 7, 2006 | Troy Hooper

Former U.S. Secretary of State Colin L. Powell was sitting in an ambulance Thursday night after falling ill while having dinner with friends.

Powell, 69, could be seen on Hopkins Avenue sitting up in an ambulance at 11 p.m. while his wife, Alma Vivian Johnson, and an aide looked on and two paramedics attended to his care. After sitting up for several moments, paramedics had him lie down inside the ambulance.

The four-star general was having dinner at Campo de Fiori with a large entourage that included former President Bill Clinton and Aspen businessman Michael Goldberg.

A source inside the dinner party said Powell was displaying symptoms compatible with altitude sickness and that the situation did not appear to be serious. No further information about the status of his health was immediately available.

Powell served as the nation's 65th secretary of state from 2001 to 2005. Before that, he was a professional soldier for 35 years, holding numerous command and staff positions before rising to the rank of a four-star general.

He served as the 12th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest military position in the U.S. Department of Defense, from 1989 to 1993. During that time, he oversaw Operation Desert Storm as well as other national emergencies. He has earned numerous honors including two Presidential Medals of Freedom, the President's Citizens Medal and the Congressional Gold Medal.

The former secretary of state is in town for the Aspen Ideas Festival.

"The four-star general was having dinner at Campo de Fiori with a large entourage that included former President Bill Clinton . . . "

How do you sit down for dinner with a man whose campaign released your wife's medical records to the press? Forgiving the guy is one thing, embracing him, which puts his hands again on your back for another knife thrust, is entirely another.

Aspen's elevation is 7,800 feet. That seems a little low for altitude sickness, but it's a very variable thing.

But elderly people are more susceptible.

"Aspen's elevation is 7,800 feet. That seems a little low for altitude sickness"

If it was his first day there, headaches and nausea would be possible.

And yes, it does vary from person to person and even from one trip to the next.

How? He is being blackmailed by Clinton.Anyone who doesn't think that Clinton took more than 900 FBI files is naive.

The Clinton mafia is ruthless. They make the Kennedys look like chior boys.I am sure they have dirt on every politician in the US.

Every individual who is thinking of running for president, is giving serious thought as to what team clinton has on them and when will it be leaked to the press.

Hillary will be president in 2008.

"How do you sit down for dinner with a man whose campaign released your wife's medical records to the press"?

....its really quite simple...when The Man says "sit down" ...you sit down. When The Man says..you WILL be Defense Secretary in my wife's administration...you say YES SIR. You see...The Man has hung a picture of his former attorney, Vince Foster, over the dining room table....

I concur. This is the red herring in the report - it just doesn't make sense. Powell ostensibly turned into a politician when he joined Bush's cabinet and, perhaps, hanging out with the likes of Slick Willy isn't as repulsive as it used to be when Powell was a conservative.

And it's relative. Not sure where Powell lives, but DC & NYC are only a few feet above sea level.

I'm sure that if I were at a dinner with Bill Clinton I would become intensely nauseous. Of course, Powell seems to like these Demagogue scumbags a bit too much, so maybe it's just the altitude.

Drumheller Fountain, in the center of Frosh Pond, was a gift from Regent Joseph Drumheller for the university's centennial celebration in 1961.

Drumheller Fountain

I suspect that Joseph Drumheller (former President of UW Board of Regents, Washington State Senator & President of Spokane Chamber of Commerce) was related to these Drumhellers (one of whom lent his name to 'Drumheller, Alberta': Drumheller
