Taepodong-2 pointed at waters near Hawaii: report
(Kyodo) _ The Taepodong-2 long-range missile recently test-fired by North Korea was pointed at waters near Hawaii, the Sankei Shimbun reported Friday in its online edition.
Citing government sources in Japan and the United States, the report said Japan's Defense Agency and the U.S. military reached the conclusion after analyzing the missile's path from data collected by Aegis-equipped destroyers and RC-135S electronic reconnaissance aircraft.
The missile was test-fired from its launching site in Musudanri in northeast North Korea early Wednesday local time before landing into the Sea of Japan about several hundred kilometers away.
The authorities decided that the missile was pointed at Hawaii from the angle of its nose cone immediately after the launch and the altitude it has reached, the report said.
The distance between North Korea and Hawaii is about 7,000 kikometers. While Taepodong-2 was widely believed to have the firing range of 3,500-6,000 km, its actual range can be longer, the report said.
It is not clear why North Korea targeted areas near Hawaii, but the sources believe North either wanted to show that the missile's firing range includes the United States, or because Hawaii is home to the headquarters of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, or because the missile could mistakenly hit a land area if fired toward Alaska, the report said.
I hear that NORAD is renting some apartments.
The missile was launched from Incheon International Airport??? I don't think that's in NK.
I want to personally thank all of the Democrats who have stood in the way of a missile defense system.
The bipartisan response is harsh and sure to draw condemnation from the civilized world-
While you're at it thank Clinton for having given the nut the elements needed to create the nuclear bomb.
And pray it wont be coming back to us
I read that it failed because some part(s) fell off shortly after launch.
These dongmissiles are getting to be a real pain, if they can drop anywhere en route to their "nominal" target. Oh sure, that was just a test into the mid-Pacific, so sorry it aborted over Tokyo.
Yes, but they have been re-engined. The active force KC-135s, and few other varients, with big fan engines (CFM56/F-108), newly built. The Reserve and Guard birds got take off JT3Ds from airliners. TF-33s in miltary designation. They are Lower bypass turbo fans, but still better than the J-57, turbojets they sported originally. The AWACS,which is not a -135 airframe, also uses TF-33s, at least in US service. Other nations have up engined to high bypass turbofans, for better performance/higher altitude flight, and for much increased fuel economy. I don't know which engines the RC varients use. Some of each is possible. According to the Air Force Fact Sheet they've gotten the F-108s.
Already happended. You can buy pre fabricated shelters, just dig a hole, insert shelter and backfill. Just one example. Useful as tornado shelter as well.
My grandmother had a good shelter, but she called it a "Cellar". She used it store eggs, potatoes, onions, etc. But it was underground. All it needed was to fill up the entrance steps with sandbags and seal up that opening, say with plastic sheeting and duct tape. Oh and of course a supply of water. Food it had.
It's not the air that's radioactive, it's the dust in it. You just filter it out. That can be done with toilet paper rolls, large juice cans, a cardboard box and some plastic sheeting... and of course duct tape. See "Pulling Through" by Dean Ing.
LOL, looks like some good earplugs coming his way!!
Agreed. These are the actions of a desperate man.
Will he go down quietly, or swinging?
Some experts believe it was fuel knock. It didn't help matters either that the missile sat on the pad for a good couple weeks due to bad launch weather.
To the distinguished members of DPNK..
You fargin' iceholes. You have violated my fargin' rights. You fire missiles at this sonofabotchin' country..... This is FARGIN WAR!!!!!!!!!!
