Pig's head tossed into Lewiston (Maine) mosque

LEWISTON — A 33-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly threw a severed pig's head into a Lewiston mosque while a group of Muslim men were praying.

The frozen pig's head was rolled into the Lewiston Auburn Islamic Center on Lisbon Street about 10:15 p.m. Monday, witnesses told the Sun Journal of Lewiston.

About 40 men were bowed down as part of their prayer ritual when the incident occurred. They got up and ran outside but were unable to locate anyone. None of the men was hit by the animal head.

Brent Matthews of Lewiston went to the police department Tuesday, told a detective he had thrown the head and was charged with desecration of a place of worship, a misdemeanor.

The charge is considered a hate-bias crime, so Matthews' case will be referred to the Attorney General's Office for further investigation, Lt. Don Mailhot said.

Pigs are considered unclean by Muslims, who are barred from eating pork, and the act was viewed as a deliberate insult upon the religion.

Lewiston police bagged the head as evidence and took it to the police station, witnesses said. Police Lt. Mark Watson said the head was then disposed of.

Matthews, who was out on bail, "admitted to doing it," Mailhot said. "He thought it was funny; it was going to be a big joke. The police department doesn't take anything like that lightly."

"There's a number of Muslims who live here, like it here and just want to practice thier religeon like anyone else. They don't want to blow things up, they don't want to cut off our heads and they don't want to murder your sister for driving herself to work and letting people see her ankles when she walks down the street. "

If your fantasy were true, then they wouldn't be true muslims following mohammed, allah, nor bin laden. They want to alright...it's just a matter of timing. The stated goal of islam is to master the world. As their population grows here, and it will, the threat to our sovereignty will increase.

Course one needn't take my word for it since the evidence exists worldwide. Chenya, Kosovo, East Timor, America, England, Spain, Bosnia, Israel, Lebanon, Solmalia, Philipines, Uganda, just to name a few.

Unless it's a really nice oil painting of dogs playing poker. That's art!

More than you may think.

Arthur Sarnoff also painted Saturday Evening Post covers, was a contemporary of Norman Rockwell and student of Andrew Wyeth, also painted scantily clad pinups, and a famous portrait of President Kennedy.

I personally think hate crime laws are unconstitutional. Our system is set up to punish the commission of a crime NOT the reason for the crime. If we punish for a reason then we are being punished for our thoughts and that is dangerous.People who support hate crime laws are the true racists and bigots and would also support Hitler,Stalin and Saddam.

you are missing my point entirely. I'm not making any value judgements about Chrisitanity, the Bible, The Koran or Islam.

let's untie this from religeon...you cannot assume that every muslim is going to follow every edict in the koran with any more certainty than you can assume that every employee at McDonald's is going to follow every edict in the employee handbook.

I have a sinking feeling that the kid who made my Oreo McFlurry yesterday doesn't always wash his hands after using the restroom....

The problem isn't conversion, it is the supremacist ideology.

There are nations that hold to Islamic law, a political system, not a religion. There are practioners who want everyone under that political system. At least bowing to the supremacy of that system and respecting their laws of blasphemy, never mind that First Amendment in OUR country.

I don't consider all muslims a threat. However this is not a generational fad that will pass with time. It flares up around the world and lasts for centuries. More must be done from within mosques to end this dream of world domination. The West does not have theocracies although it has a dominant faith. While there are some laws inspired by biblical texts (including the 10 Commandments), many have been dropped by legislatures (including many blue laws on Sundays and laws against adultry...).

Islamic societies codify one set of rights for muslims and another for non-muslims (Jews and Christians being lesser under the law and atheists, Buddhists, and Hindus below that).

Again, vandalism and vigilantism is not the answer. It never is. But there is no analogy between Christians and muslims.

I know there's parts of the Koran that tell them to make war on infidels, but does every Christian toe the line on every edict in the bible?

WHOA RIGHT THERE!

There is no moral equivalence, so don't attempt to draw one. It only blurs and distorts the fact that, if every Muslim did what his holy book required him to do, and every Christian did what the Bible (which out to be CAPITALIZED, btw) instructed him to do, you would have ultra-violent Muslims and ultra-gentle Christians.

Only because man is a LUKEWARM animal do we have some good Muslims who don't live the life their philosophy requires.

We also have a lot of Christians who are lukewarm, but the result of a lukewarm Christian isn't a murderous individual, it's an amoral or apathetic one.

The lukewarm Muslim is actually a nicer person than the lukewarm Christian (I've known a few), because lukewarm is a peaceful direction on the spectrum (for them). For us, it's away from peaceful.

Anyone else understand this?

Perhaps if someone had slipped a skillet of frying bacon into the mosque, some conversions would have occured. :o)

I just want to shoot down the nonsense about how "horrible" the Bible - OT - is. And thus equalizing it to the Koran.

The Bible mostly describes WHAT HAS HAPPENED. It's alot of history with some edicts thrown in. NONE of which are universal laws to go around killing (or even just torturing) everyone.

The Koran, meanwhile, gives universal edicts to go out and make People of the Book pay the "poll tax" (which often means literally getting your head knocked around as humiliation while you pay your tax) and kill all the non-Book people.

Huge difference.

I trust no Muslim. The 9/11 murderers lived among Americans for years while waiting for the order to murder 3000 people. How can we ever be sure that the friendly Muslim who "just wants to be left alone" isn't waiting on a similar order. The truth is that we can't. I assume they're are up to something.

Gee, and I thought the only Mohammedan ever in Lewiston was Cassius Clay ... but then some of the 9/11 terrorists boarded a flight to Boston in Portland. Maybe that mosque is more important in the war on terror than people are letting on.

There's a number of Muslims who live here, like it here and just want to practice thier religeon like anyone else. They don't want to blow things up, they don't want to cut off our heads and they don't want to murder your sister for driving herself to work and letting people see her ankles when she walks down the street. >

But don't you get the distinct impression that too few of them would be bothered if their co-religionists did any of the deeds you describe?

Hi SALChamps03-

We share similar sentiments. Even as a little kid decades ago, my elderly grandparents would warn us about the dangerous and violent "Mohammadans" in our midst. These people were tolerated and always closely monitored by Christians in the ethnic communities due to their utter unpredictability.

Whoa yourself, cowpoke....no one is drawing any equivalencies between Christianity, Islam or any other faith....my point is that you have to remember that these are people, not religeons. Most muslims in this country aren't interested in following the koran to the letter. It isn't because they're "lukewarm," it's because they don't want to kill anyone or start a fight over their beliefs. They simply want to worship in peace without a bunch of xenophobes assuming that they're savages. Like most of "us", they're nice people.

On the other hand, no Christian is capable of following the bible to the letter. It isn't because they're lukewarm either, it's because they'tre simply imperfect human beings. Yep...if you find that person that adheres to every edict in the bible, you throw yourself on the ground and kiss his feet because Christ has come again.

Okay...alright...not all Muslims want to kill the infidels. Some just want Allah to strike them dead with lightning. It doesn't mean "they" want to kill us.

When a few more of Muslims (hell when any of them) in this country begin to show some disgust for the actions of so many then maybe I might believe it.
