Those people were dealing with a brand new world, severe weather, little food, and hostile natives, and yet people were harshly punished for things like profanity. 18 and 19th Century America were certainly more liberal than that, but still way more restrictive than our world today. You are right concerning the alcohol focus, yet there were major restrictions on practices on Sunday in general.
