It's not often you see Republicans trying to run to the left of a Democrat on environmental issues, but that's exactly where a pair of new TV ads are aimed in the gubernatorial race between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Phil Angelides.
Two ads were released this morning by the California Republican Party on their website. No word yet on whether there's any real money being handed over to air these ads, or whether making a splash in the political media was the main goal.
The pro-Arnold ad (see it here) uses some pretty well-known environmental issues from the Schwarzenegger era: creation of the Sierra Nevada Conservancy, support for more solar powered homes, and exploration into vehicles that use hydrogen fuel. None of these have been fully completed (though the conservancy is the farthest along), but all are part of the governor's pitch that he's as green as they get in Republican circles.
The Republican Party says the ads will air on TV statewide, but won't say with what frequency.
The anti-Angelides ad (see it here) again quotes defeated primary challenger Steve Westly in his criticisms over Angelides' record as a land developer. "What if Steve Westly was right?" says the announcer.
The Angelides campaign was quick to respond, with statements from environmental leaders criticizing Schwarzenegger on a number of issues. Campaign spokesman Nick Papas, in an e-mail to reporters, wrote: "The Republican Party running ads about the environment is as absurd as a Governor with seven Hummers pretending to be pro-environment."
Just remember , this is not your grandfather's GOP. (apologies to Oldsmobile) ;-)
SW--If you watch this, please keep all throwable objects out of your hands or else you will be buying a new TV.

The jolly green Governator
Schwarzenegger hopes to ride his environmental record to reelection in November. Can opponent Phil Angelides out-enviro Arnold?
Enviros are scrambling for ringside seats to the California gubernatorial race, poised to become a green mêlée of WrestleManian proportions. In one corner of the ring is Arnold "The Governator" Schwarzenegger, a Republican; in the opposite corner, his newly designated Democratic opponent, Phil "State Treasurator" Angelides. Each will try to use his formidable environmental record to put his opponent in a half nelson.
Already Schwarzenegger is touting his environmental achievements and revving up his bright-green campaign bus, complete with a Yosemite National Park vista painted on its flanks. (If you suspect this is an attempt to dissociate himself from other not-so-green members of his party, well, the governor is happy to confirm your suspicions: "You don't see that bus saying, VOTE FOR ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, REPUBLICAN," he recently told Newsweek.
(snip)
Ted Kennedy's party vehicle of choice, if I'm not mistaken.
I like the "What if Steve Westley was right?" ads better.
I liked the guy with the broom promising to clean up Sacramento and yelling Cut, Cut, Cut.
What happened to that guy?
"You don't see that bus saying, VOTE FOR ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, REPUBLICAN"..
Now, why am I not surprised to see that?
Oh yeah, demographics.
I hope Tom brings his kilt out and rents a big Fleetwood and trails the Gubinator "StraightTalk Express BS, uhh Bus,,
Just so aRnie doesn't try to blow cigar smoke up Tom's kilt.
It sounds like the CA-GOP is trying to give the State's Dim voters a case of buyer's remorse.
Seems to me the CA-GOP is giving an awful lot of the State's Repub voters a case of buyer's remorse, as well.
LOL, that was Buick.
