Knox County attorneys today asked the Tennessee Supreme Court to hear their appeal of a chancellor's decision to invalidate the charter.
The motion asks the justices to intercede in the lawsuit of five county commissioners seeking to overturn term limits for public officials.
Chancellor John Weaver last month ruled the charter was "invalid, incomplete and ineffective."
In a separate opinion, he gave the county 180 days to amend its charter.
Also last month, Senior U.S. District Court Judge James H. Jarvis used the power of his federal bench to ask the state Supreme Court to decide if the charter is indeed invalid.
If the county's motion is granted, the Supreme Court would have the opportunity to review the entire "body of evidence" in the case, according to a county press release.
"If the Supreme Court would take this case, it would be the fastest and most effective way to resolve the Charter case," Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale said in the release.
"I believe the solution is clear — the will of the people should prevail. They overwhelmingly voted for the Charter in 1988 and term limits in 1994."

Tenn. Supreme Court just upheld term limits voted into place here in Shelby County (Memphis area but not the city.)
That's what started this whole mess in Knox County. After that SC ruling, the Professional Politicians that didn't want to lose their grip on power sued to overturn the Charter itself, thus voiding Knox County's term limits.
