Two Western Pennsylvania men will belly up to the World Series of eating today.
They will try to become the best of the wurst in the dog-eat-dog world of competitive eating, wolfing down wieners at Coney Island in Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest.
Brian Subich, of Johnstown, Cambria County, and Chip Simpson, 24, of Harrisville, Butler County, are two of 16 contestants who qualified to compete in the contest that's been won the past five years by a 5-foot-7, 150-pound Japanese man, Takeru Kobayashi. He once put down 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes.
The contest, which has been a Fourth of July tradition since 1916 at Coney Island in New York, will be televised on ESPN, proving that competitive eating has come a long way from your grandfather's pie-eating contest at the county fair.
It's become a sport with competing organizations trying to outdo each other in their hunger for glory -- and cash prizes.

By what right do you have telling me what to think?
When did you become the spelling police?
My rationality is my own, if you dont like it, thats fine, I see no derangement in thinking a person that works has a right to spend their money as they like. If you hate rich people get your own rationality checked out
I rest my case. Your words indicate that you are the moral police. These people in the contest offend your sensitivity. Boo-hoo. That's just too sad.
LOL

If you hate people eating hotdogs you may need some humor in your life. By the way, if you find this hotdog eating contest repulsive or "inappropriate", don't watch it.
By the way, if it makes you feel any better, I was listening to a radio report on the hotdog eating contest a while ago. Then a talkshow host in my town was talking about it on his show. He said that he wouldn't be surprised if someone died soon enough in one of these contests. I agree.
When I was watching the contest it actually grossed me out to watch it. But that's life in America.
By the way, I don't know if you heard that one of those contestants yesterday was a vegetarian! How odd is that?
Thanks for the concern, but I dont really need to feel better. I only mentioned that I thought eating contests were a bit inappropriate with people starving in the world and a certain poster tried to make a federal case of it.
Its no big deal really if people want to eat till they puke. Just a silly contest in my view. Yes: I wouldnt be at all surprised if someone died as a result of ingesting this amount of food. I believe we have all over eaten at one time or another and the feeling isnt pleasant. I am pretty sure that off-camera the first thing these people do is bring that food back up, bringing with it the danger of inhaling their vomit.Again , not a pretty picture.
If one of the competitors was a vegetarian then they arent any longer are they?
In the "pregame" the one guy who was the vegetarian was presented. He only goes off his vegeteriasn regime for eating contests. How convenient. Go figure.

Bob Shoudt If Coney Island had a tofu hot dog contest, "Humble" Bob Shoudt would be a favorite. This 286-pound resident of Royersford, Pa., is a vegetarian and only eats meat in IFOCE events. He still managed to finish fourth at the 2005 Krystal Burger Square Off (51 burgers in 8 minutes).
I dont know if this Vegetarian would quite meet the description of a Vegetarian but he certainly would meet the description of a Hypocrit.
You're 62. I'm 60. We both know that starving people in the world will still be starving even in the event these eating contests were elliminated.
It's no big deal.
But I must say, I really do wonder where all the hot dogs go. After the contest, I saw that little Japanese guy who won, and he did not look too blown up. It was amazing.
By the way....... did you see 'Cool Hand Luke' with the 50 hard-boiled eggs?
:-)
LOL! You're right.
