I visited Valencia on a train from Madrid in the 80's. They worked fine then. The Roman aqueduct there is very well built and can still be used today if needed. 3 blocks up the Avenida was a nice restaurant. Ate lunch, walked around the aqueduct and took the train back. Check it out. It still looks good as new!
I visited Valencia in 1964 and 1965 as a sailor in the sixth fleet. I was paid roughly $180.00 a month and could go ashore and live it up. That was when a dollar still had some value.
I was based at Torrejon AB from '83 to '86. Had sep rats/housing for 2 years. The dollar was KING! I walked into a big supermercado and bought a kilo of big shrimp for ~$6 for example. Took train trips with a buddy all over Spain and Europe after planning them. The long ones were 1st Classe sleeper trains that had to be reserved.
Today is the second day of the 'Running of the Bulls' in Pamplona. I heard a drunk American got run over and injured yesterday already. If you want to see a whole city get wasted for a few days, go there.
There is a large stone statue of Hemingway on an island in the center of the main 8-lane avenida with a very large tree over him. He never wrote about stoned rock bands playing all night long in every big square if I remember correctly. And that was 21 years ago.
You can only see what you can while your ship is parked at Rota. I never visited Cadiz. Did you ever visit Benidorm?

I was on the Saratoga for the last nine months or so of my enlistment and we stopped in Valencia and Barcelona regularly but I never made it to any other towns except a one night stop in Rota on the way back. My enlistment ran out before the cruise ended and I transferred to an oiler for the return trip.
Was it intended to stop at the station or just pass on through?
