The penny should be abandoned as well as the dollar bill. Replace the latter with the dollar coins and we'll all be set for a couple of decades more. Then we can target the nickel! :)

Less publicized, when copper hit $3.80 and nickel was $9.45, there was 2.9 cents worth of copper and 2.4 cents of nickel (total 5.3 cents of metal) in a nickel.
Pre-1982 copper cents contained 2.5 cents worth of copper. I have saved bottles and bottles of them.
