I got mine as an enlisted man and was allowed to wear it when I later became an officer.

Yep, that's how we could tell when the zeroes were worth anything. If they had a Good Conduct medal, you knew they were mustangs (prior enlisted).

Just kiddin'! I worked with some darn fine officers in all services that were able to overcome their lack of enlisted service. :-)

My experience has been that mustangs were either really, really good, or really, really bad. No inbetween at all. Mostly, good, though. Not entirely, though, either.

Having grown up a bit, I suppose I owe Lt. Hoying an apology. I laughed at him when he suggested I should try to go to OCS...although I do think I would have made a LOUSY officer.
