You are correct - no printing press - all scrolls were handwritten.
And .. at that time in history, the ruling class did not believe the lower class were educated enough to be able to read the writings and properly interpret them [must have been liberals].
It was only King James who had the courage to gather together a group of scholars and translate the writings into a book - the Bible - so the masses could read it for themselves [must have been a conservative]. That's why the most commonly used translation is called, "The King James version".
However, as to the uneducated writing the Bible - Paul (who was converted to Christianity), was a very, very well educated person Paul said he considered it all "dung" compared to his relationship with Jesus. After his conversion, it was Paul who wrote 2/3 of the New Testament.
