- Incumbent Arnold Schwarzenegger is tied in Californias gubernatorial race, according to the latest poll by Zogby Interactive. 45 per cent of respondents in the Golden State would vote for Schwarzenegger, while 45 per cent would support Democrat Phil Angelides.
Schwarzenegger won Californias recall election in October 2003 with 48.7 per cent of the vote as a Republican. In November 2005, California voters took part in a special election on eight measures. Schwarzenegger actively promoted a "Yes" vote in the initiatives concerning tenure for public teachers, redistricting, and spending, which where defeated.
Angelides, who has served as Californias state treasurer since 1998, defeated state controller Steve Westly in the Jun. 6 Democratic primary with 48 per cent of the vote.
The election is scheduled for Nov. 7. Since 1953, California has had five Republican and three Democratic heads of government.
