What I don't understand is why the Israeli government is framing the issue solely about the kidnapping of the soldier, and not about the violation of sovereign Israeli territory and the blatant attack on it, which constitutes an act of war. This position would strike me as a stronger one.

All I can guess is that that would bring in the entire Muslim world.

One thing that caught me by surprise was a report that the Israelis were razing (bulldozing) farmland. That didn't seem to fit into anything but a systematic plan to push the Palis out of Gaza, and that couldn't be systematic unless they had pretty good reason to know the soldier is dead already.

Unless the "razing" were minesweeps...?

I really have no idea...

Indeed. But Israel is framing this solely about the Israeli soldier, not about their completely justified counterattack on an enemy that has declared war, implicitly, explicitly, anyway you want to look at it. Does this mean when the soldier is discovered, dead or alive, the reason for their offensive is over? CNN framed it today as "Israel rejected demands by militants over captured soldier". Nowhere was the infringement on sovereign territory mentioned, and this is because Israel itself has not mentioned it. This could portend badly for them in future conflicts.
