The deal feel through when, as I understand it, the Halpers wanted to reserve some of the land so they could change the use (so they wouldn't be locked into unprofitable farming). There is also the bribery scandal angle. I'm sure they didn't make any friends getting McGreevey's boys wiretapped by the FBI.

FYI, I think there is also an environmental angle here that the conservative defenders of the farm are missing, that might help get some of the (numerous) environmentall conscious leftists in Piscataway involved, too. According to the flyer we got from the mayor in Piscataway, they want to turn the land into things like soccer fields. What people need to realize is that a lot of the Halper property remains fallow and, as a result, we've got a lot of wildlife in the area, including a flock of wild turkeys. If they turn that land into mowed soccer fields, I'm not sure where all that wildlife is supposed to go. I suspect the turkeys and other animals will be lost because they won't have any place to feed.
