actually, some retelling of Superman myths in Comics in the last few year have him technically born on earth in Kansas.

99% of retcons suck. And now massive retcons seem to be the only way DC can sell comics.

but a few years ago, the Justice League of America was changed to JLA because they didn't want the word America used because it might offend some

Where did you hear that? And, if so, then why will Justice League America #1, a new title, be released in August 2006?

You are right that a new 'Justice League of America" will be started soon, next month #0 comes out. Also, this fall a new 'Justice Society of America' will start replacing the JSA book.

The new 'Justice League of America' is replacing the 'JLA' book run that began in the 90's When that book was released one of the known reasons that America wasn't used was they didn't want to offend anyone, also they hoped to make the book new and fresher at the time. Another reason was that of the seven members, four were from, Krypton, Mars, Atlantis, and Paradise Island. The reason, 'Justice League' animated series on cable left America out of the title was for the same reason.

jbw's right...the Justice League of America WAS changed to JLA so as to omit the offending "America" word. They gave the same "the superheroes are here for everybody, not just Americans" line they mention in the article. I remember when they announced it (my kids were just at the right age for getting into Batman/Superman stuff).

As for the new title...well, perhaps the whole JLA thing didn't work out like they wanted and decided to go back to the original. Truthfully, I have no idea why they made that decision.

Regards,
