His rise from the son of a coal miner and product of a local grammar school who rose to the rank of Wing Commander would be an amazing story in and of itself.

However, to be a multiple ace and literally stand like Horatio at the bridge and keep Britain and democracy safe from its then greatest peril is truly the stuff from which legends are created.
