Google Aims to Speed the Online Checkout Line (they want your credit card #)
New York Times ^ | June 29, 2006 | Saul Hansell

In its quest to "organize the world's information," Google now wants to keep track of your credit card number and where you live.

The company is introducing Google Checkout today, a service that will allow users to make purchases from online stores using payment and shipping information they keep on file with Google.

Google's aim, said Eric E. Schmidt, the chief executive, is to make it easier and faster for people to buy products advertised on Google — thus attracting more advertisers.

"The goal here is to make it be one nanosecond from the time the customer decides to buy to the time the transaction is complete and the product is on the way," Mr. Schmidt said.

For consumers, this sort of service, often referred to as an online wallet, is hardly new. Microsoft, AOL and Yahoo have offered similar wallets, which proved to have limited appeal. While the PayPal service of eBay has attracted widespread use, it offers additional features like the ability to transfer money from checking accounts.

And then when sopmeone "accidentally" releases said information, we'll all be assured that "no sensitive information was released".

No thanks, Google. My credit card #s are not stored anywhere, if I have any say over it.

I'm counting down the days until I have to buy a private island just to avoid getting spied on at all times.

Who cares about your credit card number? You are not liable if someone steals it.

I suggest that Google issue its own credit card, the security of which is guaranteed by Google (with complete indemnification of the card holder for everything except payment for valid purchases). That's the only way I would consider giving my info to Google.

Have you ever had your personal info stolen?

Money is the least of it. You will spend hours dealing with creditors, businesses and lawyers as you cope with the cascading fallout from the incident.

Maybe they just got the credit card number, maybe they have all your personal info and are constructing a web of fraud. Even if only one credit card is compromised, you still need to cancel every card, alert the credit bureaus, banks and other lenders.

Does anyone really need 01 nanosecond response time on an online purchase?

They don't want you to think about it--you may back out.

Fat chance. The airheads working for our government can't keep track of data and Google thinks they can. What a joke!! IMO, you would have to be a mindless idiot to give them the info or perhaps a Liberal which is one in the same thing.

I'm inclined to think this is a poor business decision. I use a Google toolbar because I can turn off the Page Rank and not have it spying on me, and it is free of spyware and adware.

Google quickly took over the search business for these reasons--because they could be trusted.

Now, if they have all these card numbers and some hacker gets hold of them, they will swiftly lose that reputation and never recover it.
