Maybe it was found on a desk in Hilarity's Senate office.

New York Times will publish the info in Sunday's edition. I mean, it's in our best interest to know, right?

Yours was a form letter? Mine was on DOD letterhead 32 pound watermarked bond paper handwritten with Rummy's signature.

If the laptop was not under "control", finding it really means nothing, since the data on the hard drive could've been copied hundreds, if not thousands, of times and sold or given to anyone.

Thank God. I got a letter saying my info was on that laptop.

Look on the bright side. You now have 47 SoCal lettuce harvesters contributing to your Social Security account.

Big deal. The hard drive has certainly been copied by now.

I doubt it, but it all depends. If this laptop was purchased by a student, before the story broke, then I think there is a good chance that the thing was simply wiped clean by the perp, and then sold. I believe that were several weeks after the theft before the incident made it into the media. If this all happened before the story broke, then the perpetrator probably didn't know what he had on his hands.

WASHINGTON - The government has recovered the stolen laptop computer containing sensitive data for up to 26.5 million veterans and military personnel, Veterans Affairs Secretary Jim Nicholson announced Thursday.

Nicholson also said there have been no reports of identity theft since the May 3 burglary at the Maryland home of an agency employee.

“There is reason to be optimistic,” he told reporters just before the start of another in a series of hearings Congress has had on one of the worst breaches of information security. “It’s a very positive note in this very tragic incident,” Nicholson said.

If it didn't have the capability to copy info to a CD, it would simply be a matter of swapping out the read-only drive with one that has R/W capability...or they could simply plug in a memory stick.
