Other sources say a guy who knows Hebrew has handed them out T-Shirts saying "convert and become a Christian" (or so) in Hebrew letters, which would make the anger of the orthodox understandable.

Have you further infos?

One shouldn't wear things that one cannot read...that would have been a bad thing.

Can you comment on this, have you also heard partly contradicting reports about that incident?

Getting handed a t-shirt is not a reason to hit anyone.

Of course, this is Haaretz and they have an anti-Orthodox attitude so there may be facts missing.

If the reporting is accurate, this incident is disgusting.

First I've heard of this. If true, they'll end up in jail.

Lot of conflicting information.

The Mea She`arim is not a fruitful area for missionaries.

Also not so clear about t-shirts, period. I would think women would need their arms covered, which could be the simple answer.

Mere words on a T-shirt are not sufficient justification for violence. Shame on these so-called "ultra-orthodox" for besmirching Judaism with their aggression.

Not by any standard I use.

[which would make the anger of the orthodox understandable.]

No, it's not understandable. Just as it's not "understandable" that the jews are being harassed by muslims.
