I'm sorry I had to laugh when I read that. I'm Jewish. Sitting in a restaurant one day with my kids (Red Robin in Hurst, Texas), a woman came up to me and asked me how I felt about condemning my children to hell.

Yes I was wearing a Star of David. Yes I was eating and minding my own business. No I did nothing to attract her attention OTHER than be wearing a necklace.

Anyway -- she blabbered for about 10 minutes about how I and my children (as well as my husband since apparently he's not a good enough Christian since I'm not converted) are all going to hell.

*sigh*

Fundamentalist Protestants believe everyone is born damned because of the sin of Adam (which kind of makes guilt impossible when you think about it). Anyway, when they try to conver the "unsaved" (including their own children, since they don't baptize them) they are merely being true to their religion. Yes, it's a different kind of religion than what most folks are used to (including Catholic and Orthodox chr*stians who stopped converting other people 1700 years ago and who go apoplectic at the thought of Protestant missionaries).

I am not a Fundamentalist Protestant, but I don't understand their role as universal scapegoat of all religion and magnetic pole of attraction for everyone's attacks. The Amish won't drive cars or use zippers. Seventh Day Adventists are vegetarians. Eastern Orthodox believe G-d sends "heavenly fire" down in the Church of the holy sepulchre each year on the eve of Orthodox e*ster. Shakers live communally and won't marry or procreate. It's a big world. There are lots of religions. Some of them are actually so bizarre as to believe in objective and exclusive truth. Therefore these religions try to convert people. They think they have to convert everyone, without exception. How can one condemn this without violating the same rule of non-judgmentalness towards all which the proselytizers themselves are supposedly violating?

Once again, there are Calvinists who believe G-d chooses who goes to Heaven and who goes to Hell and no one can do anything about it. I don't know if this infuriates people or not, but they certainly aren't going to try to convert anyone.

That reminds me of my first date with the woman who became the love of my life, so far. She was wearing a light sweater with a high collar, but she had a Star of David necklace rather prominently sticking out of it. She wasn't observant, but she wanted me to know right up front. I thought it was charming. :)

My family was Jewish but my Grandpa turned his back on it. They never told me, I found out for sure a few years ago doing research. I was raised to love and respect Jewish folks - I could never understand anti-semitism. I've always adored Israel as far back as I can remember. It hurts me when I think they aren't defending themselves.
