Ultra-Orthodox Jews attack Christian tourists in Jerusalem
Haaretz ^ | Jonathan Lis

A group of 50 pro-Israel Christian tourists came under attack Wednesday from some 100 residents of the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea She'arim in Jerusalem. Three of the tourists and a police officer were wounded in the attack. They received treatment at the scene. The tourists arrived at Mea She'arim wearing orange T-shirts with the words "Love your neighbor as yourself" printed across them. As they neared one of the squares, the local residents apparently identified them as Christians and began to hit them. Police forces in the area stepped in to stop the violence, but did not make any arrests. Police say they are waiting for the tourists to file official complaints.

I just found out about that longstanding FR rule!

The rule you refer to is the one banning conspiracy and hate site content. That limits conversation for some folk.

How far is your idea of selling the "Christian message" allowed to go?

Can you tie up a Jew and force him to listen. Break down his door to preach in his kitchen? Put him to the rack? Maybe give them a shower?

We Jews know "Christians" like you. Real Christians would disavow a anti-Semitic creep like you and your "message".

Of course, if the police acted on the scene, the object of the complaints could be apprehended. By waiting until someone complains, the police response will be, "Who did it?" The answer to which will be, "Some Jew guy."

Hope not. If the police don't know the identity of the players, they're not doing their job. Time will tell.

From the wildly different media accounts of this little dustup, it appears to be less lethal than a typical brawl between soccer fans of opposing teams, and the "visiting team" gave as good as they got from the "home team."

Look, the folks in Meah Shearim are the Jewish equivalent of the Fred Phelps Christians, or Islamic Muslims. But they don't go off their turf to harrass others, and if you are on their turf, don't diss them.

Consider that if these same Christians had done the exact same thing just a few miles down the road, they would be missing heads and other body parts.

I do miss RCW2001, he was more entertaining.

He was, in a perverse sort of way.

I've been to this neighborhood a few times. My guess is they thought the Christians were there to proselytize since they had on garish shirts. They would have has no trouble if the shirts has been left in their luggage

[Look, the rules of Mea She'arim are simple]

Obviously, the O-jews have no respect for the rules unless beating up Christians is part of their religious doctrine. These O-jews are a bunch of cowards; attacking peaceful people seems to be the only fight they want... as long as they out number them.

And Christians who wander into an Orthodox neighborhood to proselytize and break the modesty rules are cowards too.

Let's pray together that the O-jews can find peace through Jesus.

No thanks. Orthodox Jews are peaceful. Why would Christians go into their community to harass them?

Rules? Why should those rules apply to them?

Their right to spread the Gospel trumps any silly rules about dresscodes and such.

No it doesn't.

Your religion doesn't trump anyones rights to live as they please. Haredi dresscodes aren't hurting you. Haredi don't force you to dress that way unless you come into their community. So, you want to be an ass and go into their neighborhood dressed inappropriately, prepare to be treated like an ass.

Again, why don't you go try this in Saudi? Too scared?

There would be no chr*stian missionaries if chr*stians were converted to Noachism. But to convert chr*stians to Noachism you have to "proselytize," and some people think it's better to to just tell other people that they're bad rather than actually enlighten them.

I don't know if these people were missionaries or not, but Me'ah She`arim is not a tourist attraction. I'm a Noachide and I've been to Israel, but I don't think I'd have had the courage to try to go there. These are very withdrawn, insular people and are probably suspicious of anyone not identifiably one of them (surely despised white Protestant Fundamentalists can relate to people who feel so under siege from everyone else that they lash out at all outsiders). Too bad, since these are the people who are best equipped to teach the nations. Unfortunately an anti-proselytary position commits one to defense rather than offense.

Whether or not these chr*stian were "pro-Israel," there is something strangely apropos about the image of pro-Israel chr*stians being attacked by Jews, since it is always the pro-Israel ones who arouse the most Jewish fury. I doubt hear of "ultra-Orthodox" attacking Catholics or Armenians or Eastern Orthodox. But then, Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and Armenians never proselytize. Some people seem to consider a non-proselytary position as the be-all and end-all of everything (not only Orthodox Jews, but Catholic and Orthodox chr*stians whose guts churn at the very thought of a Protestant missionary).

Those chr*stians who are condemning this "attack" need to realize that the Orthodox Jews they love so much regard chr*stianity as a false religion and don't want to be asked to convert. But these are the same people who are on your side when it comes to homosexuality, Darwinism, etc. If you cheer them when they "attack" homos, don't condemn them for attacking other "heretics."

The announcer who used this incident as an excuse to accuse pro-Israel chr*stians of "hatred" is an a-hole. Fundamentalist Protestants think they have to convert everyone. They don't even baptize their children, but wait until they reach the "age of reason" and "convert" them! Do they hate their children? Of course not! It's not that pro-Israel chr*stians don't love the Jews; they simply believe a false religion. If they were converted they would demonstrate their love of Jews in a more appropriate way. Wonder what this announcer thinks of non-proselytary Orthodox chr*stians who hate Israel's guts or the non-proselytary Vatican trying to get its mits on Jerusalem?

Finally, this whole thing--pitch the fundie Prots and the "Jewish mullahs" against each other--is just too darn convenient for certain people who dislike both. There may be much more going on here than meets the eye.

[Haredi dresscodes aren't hurting you.]

No, but they use the dresscodes to beat up people because they are a different religion. What's next for these nutbags... burkas!

The media is blowing this affair out of all proportion.

You might as well complain about sports fans who attack another group of fans who are wearing jerseys of the opposing team.

That's all this is, a stupid brawl over sports teams.

The media just needs something to take people's minds off the Gaza invasion.

Not cool. But sounds like the Christians were missionaries, so it's understandable. Not excusable, though. Police should be making a few arrests.

That I can understand, sadly enough. But that doesn't make me want to excuse it.

They should press charges.
