"ok that is the 2nd reference to Newcastle and Coal. Whats that mean?

"

It's a british thing. Newcastle upon Tyne was once a major coal producing region in England. One didn't take coal to Newcastle...that would be silly, since Newcastle had all the coal it could possibly need. Newcastle sent its coal all over England.

It just means a foolish thing to do.

Taking beer to Germany is in that category.

Taking beer to Germany is in that category.

I was in Belgium during the 1998 World Cup. France was the official host, but some early round matches were played in Belgium.

I saw a group of rowdy Danish "football" fans lugging cases of Carlsburg they had brought on the train from Denmark.

I would rate bringing Carlsburg to Belgium, the beer capital of the world, as "coals to Newcastle."

Still, there might be something about bringing one's national beer to the World Cup.

Wonder if the Brits took any Watneys Red Barrel to Germany? Probably not. One thing the Brits are not chauvinistic about is their beer. Stella is the most popular beer in Britain. Bud (American variety believe it or not) does well also.

I've always compared "taking a girl to a bar" to "taking sand to the beach."
