our local rose society in NC was big on showing/shows also. But equally into the horticulture etc also. I at first was hesitant from showing my roses. (or at least going crazy over them)..

then.. I wont a top prize for my "Pristine".. that hooked me. I turned into a rose geek!

Now here in Ohio I only have some wild roses .. I always liked the old ones.. more or less as a hedge. I have mostly English garden types of flower beds.

I love growing roses, but I don't know all that much about them, except they like lots of water, good drainage and a good systemic rose food/insecticide every once in awhile. Mine pretty much grow without much care beyond that.

I do have to force myself not to buy more roses during the bare-root planting season. I just don't have room for anymore.
