The US military is already in the process of switching back over to the .45 auto. A number of elite units are using M1911's while the powers-that-be are holding a competition for a more modern replacement.
I agree with your disdain for the 9mm in a military setting. That said, there probably would not have been the amount of complaints about the Beretta's stopping power if we weren't restricted by treaty from using modern hollow point rounds.

Actually, there was a JAG opinion in 1996 that the Hague and Geneva conventions do not apply to terrorists as they do not meet the definition of "partisans" or "irregular forces". They, among other things, do not have any type of distinctive insignia nor do they carry arms openly. As such the use of hollow point ammunition is not a problem. Spec Ops guys have it in their inventory and use it. That being said, I have observed that while a properly designed 9mm hollow point might expand, a .45 never shrinks.
