"Incorrect......You burn the flag, you are also burning the ideas and the Constitution for what it stands."
Um, no. As evidence, American flags have been burnt and defaced probably since they have been around. The ideas have not been destroyed. Your claim is disproved.
You can't destroy an idea by burning a symbol.
"That is the difference in Sunday Patriots and real Patriots."
Real Patriots know the difference between an idea and the symbol of that idea. This bill was aimed to please Sunday Patriots.
Well, if one is burned in from of the 24 hour patriots, it will be proved by a lot of injuries and severe pain. No matter what....:)
Exactly, I agree that one cannot destroy an idea by burning a flag...but, Marines Hosted the flags in Iwo, and many a flag was carried in many a war, dropped, and picked up again to realistically prove the point that the flag represents the idea and is part of the same.....thus you might call it a psychological issue or whatever, either way, the person doing the spitting, stomping on the flag, burning the flag, will experience a new world that they didn't really expect. The only thing that will protect them if they are encircled by authorities bound by the "law", or the coward has many many friends behind him......There is always another day....and long memories.
The British burning the White House during the War of 1812 didn't destroy the ideas either, but it's something that had rather negative connotations (besides, he didn't say destroy, he said burn). The act of burning a flag is the symbolic burning of the ideas and the Constitution for which it stands.
Real Patriots know the difference between an idea and the symbol of that idea.
I don't think "Real Patriots" would defend flag burning as "free speech", especially since the "right" to do so was invented by judges. The amendment which you are against is the precisely the method our founders gave us to appropriately handle issues which affect the consitution. In this case, it is to correct the actions of judges who invented a right (unless of course you are one of those "living and breathing constitution types).
The support of flag burning as constitutionally protected is support for judicial legislation.
This bill was aimed to please Sunday Patriots.
Dick Durbin said something along those lines. I'll give your statement the same consideration I gave Durbin's.
However, congratulations for posting on a topic other that Darwin.
